I have a 2600 Laser Jet Printer. Apparently, the bottom ink cartridge (Magenta) sprung a leak and now the belt (attached to back of door) is covered in red ink and all my pages come out splotchy red. What would be the steps needed to fix this?

My friend the cartridge which leaked earlier has spilled ink in side on the contacts of the printer where the smart chip comes in contact. Try to clean well with a tissue paper and try to insert slowly into the printer and this will solve the problem.
If not then carefully remove the smart chip from the old one and replace it with the new and install back in the printer.
The cartridge, as well as all ink jet cartridges has a chip inside that tells it how much ink is in the cartridge. Your cartridge is LYING, except it prevents you from printing without all cartridges working. ( same for my 6 color epson ). You need to replace the cartridge. I get my cartridges at a yahoo store called Inks4less. They have good quality for cheap.
There was a study done, analizing the amount of inks left in inkjet cartridges when they indicated empty, and the range was 7% to 25% ink still left.
Searched on web for same problem on HP2600 printer and found a sight that explained how to fix it. It is caused by the mirrors getting dirty. Magenta is the first one affected because it is on the bottom and points upwards. Requires printer to be pulled apart and mirrors cleaned. takes about 1 to 2 hours. HP2600 printer seems to be the same as Canon LBP5000.
If you are
using or have used third party generic ink cartridges or refilled ink
cartridges, the Cartridge Sensor printed circuit board may have been
damaged. We have found that some third party generic ink cartridges
leak onto the ink cartridge sensor circuit board causing an electrical
short of the ink cartridge sensors. The damage from the leaked ink
results in the machine displaying NO CARTRIDGE because the machine will
no longer recognize the installed ink cartridge(s). Genuine Brother
ink cartridges do not cause this issue because of the unique design
developed to fit specifically in the Brother products. As long as a
Brother cartridge has not been refilled, the Brother cartridge will not
I had the same problem, was tired of Spending $100 / refill - so I tried a set of Generics that were "Guaranteed" to work - well - they didn't. Apparently Epson changes the programming on the ROM on the actual ink cartridge - and if you buy an older generic cartridge it will not work if you have a newer printer - as the ROM coding is incorrect.
I do however, have a solution - that I found works. Continuous Ink Systems. I went to Super Jet USA (www.superjetusa.com) - and purchased their continuous ink system. I think it was 60 bux and it comes with 100ml of ink in each color + 18 ml in each continuous cartridge (so 118ml in total for each color) (Regular cartridges only have 18 ml). So the equivelant of just over 6 refills... Normally - 6 sets of Epson (rip off super high price make someone rich) cartridges would cost me roughly $720.00 with taxes and what not.
This system Cost me 60 bux + shipping.
Now I am not a mathamatician, a numerologist, or anyone who things long division is fun (thats just sick) - but I dont think it takes a genius to see this is one TERRIFIC deal.
And yes - The system works PERFECTLY in my Epson R380 Printer - first try - no fuss - no muss - Extremely happy I tried this solution
NOTE: I do not work for, or am in any association with Superjetusa - I just think when you find a company that is good to deal with, delivers what they promise, and gives you a good price - then you should tell the world.
