A Hampton Bay ceiling fan motor hums-loud enough for even me to hear it-just bought the house that is 9 years old--any maintenance or repair an ''older woman''--minimally adept in electronic equipment.

Greetings Carolyn Bell!

I too a an older woman and I am comfortable in electronic equipment and household appliance repair. I think I might be of some help.

Home Depot's house brand is Hampton Bay, and there are a lot of models that have been sold. You did not mention the model of Hampton Bay ceiling fan you have.

There area variety of manufacturer's, both domestic and foreign, that make various models of Hampton Bay ceiling fans. I have an Windward II. After a lot of digging, I learned that my fan was manufactured by King of Fans, a reputable company out of Florida that offers great customer support for their fans.

King of Fans website is: http://www.kingoffans.com

I looked through their models of fans and did find mine. Then I downloaded and reviewing my fan's Owner's Guide, and reviewed all of the online FAQs. I called 1-800-330-3267, concisely described the problem, and ordered the parts needed with only the fan name and SKU. Over the past 6 years or so, I have ordered a new ballast, light shade, 9" 30 Watt Circline bulb and the replacement remote.

I am about to order more parts after suffering a power surge (The needed info was in the online FAQs). My experience is great customer service and speedy delivery of the needed parts.

Heck, according to their FAQ's they might even point you to the proper manufacturer if they are not the right ones!

Good luck sister!

My hampton bay 60" fan only works in hi and its slow to start up the first 5 minutes it makes a loud hum and turns very slow. After the warm up it works fine.

The whinning in the motor is starting to go bad. You will have to replace either the motor or buy a new fan depending on the price you want to spend

Hampton Bay Sussex ceiling fan motor turns on but fan won't turn

I don't agree with previous assessments. The motor may hum, but if it doesn't spin, it is locked up. Most probably a bearing (there are 2, 1 at each end of armature. probably a 6202Z. Very common bearing for ceiling fans of all makes. You can get them in most major metro areas at a bearing distibutor for 8 - 10 bucks or at ebay for $1.69 - $2.50 per bearing plus tax and including shipping. I just got 2 new ones for a total of $6.62 delivered in 3 days. Depend on how savvy you are with tools etc. It's not rocket science but I can understand that some people don't have a clue. No offense. I'm old and don't understand today's computers all that well. Ceilng fans are analog technology.

Hampton Bay San Marino 36" Ceiling Fan

18 gauge is a little light... should use 14. Are you sure it is a hum, or is it possibly the fan resonating due to imbalance of the blades. Watch to see if the fan is oscillating when it runs. Also, does changing the speed affect the frequency of the hum. If this is the case, you have to balance the blades using metal shims.

If there is any guarantee given for them try to exchange the same. If you feel not to return the fan, then go to an expert and get repaired

Fan won't go on

It's probably the electronics inside the fan. They may need replacing. http://www.ceiling-fans-n-more.com/hampton-bay-ceiling-fan-parts.php
