We just bought 2 second hand RS/6000 7044/270 with AIX 3.3 maintenance level 4.3.3.10. The problem is they won't start. We get the IBM RS/6000 logo and the message "Starting software...Please wait". Then after time, date etc it says: "boot device: /pci@fef00000/scsi@c/sd@8" "closing stdin and stdout..."
Then nothing more happens. The code on the display is "0517"
Both machines do exactly the same thing so I guess there is something we haven't done right. The seller said they worked when shipped. Any idea what to do or try?

a couple of quick questions... are you attempting install, or post install config? and how long are you giving it before you are considering it hung.
I have observed on the 44p systems a long hang at install time when using lft0 as the console device. this "hang" is actually the serial ports timing out before going to LFT

I don't think this is likely to be the problem.
The "boot device: /pci@fef00000/scsi@c/sd@8" message indicates that you're booting from the SCSI disk at ID 8 (which is normal).
Of course, you *will* have to boot from CD to fix whatever *is* wrong once you know what it is...

It might be worth asking the seller what sort of environment they lived in before they were de-installed.
Does it stay at 517 *for ever* ?
517 is generated in /sbin/rc.boot before mounting the / and /usr filesystems. In an environment where /usr was remote and is now unavailable, I guess it might wait for *a while* before timing out and giving a 555 or 557 ?
