if you dropped your hard-drive and it stopped functioning - high chances that the drive has a physical crash. Best suggestion will be to contact a professional data recovery team if the data on the drive is really important (Coz, they charge a bomb for the recovery) Suggestion would be to talk to drivesavers.com

Try accessing it in another USB port or computer. If still not, it may unfortunately be damaged. You may be able to get it replaced under warranty.

SOURCE: apparently i need to reboot my BUFFALO &

Apparently -- if you don't know how to reboot -- you should perhaps ask some computer wizard among your friends for advice.

You don't reboot a hard drive (or any other device), you reboot THE COMPUTER. Which means you shut it down and restart it. During the startup process (which is synonymous to "booting") the computer checks all its internal interfaces and external sockets, takes an inventory of all devices and checks if they work properly.

SOURCE: xp cannot install this hardware. Buffalo

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section

SOURCE: my usb external Buffalo ministation

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

My hard drive is not recognized in my mac. The light is blue, neve turns to green

Have you tried to connect the drive to a different computer? You can also try to open Disk Utility (use spotlight search to find it). My guess is it doesn't show up there which means there is a problem with the Buffalo device. The disk is most likely fine, just the Buffalo casing needs to be replaced.

Error message if trying to save files larger than about 4GB.

The Buffalo Ministation hard drive comes with a default FAT32 file system. This file system is used for compatibility with Windows, MAC OS X, LINUX, etc. The file system does not allow files to exceed 4GB. To save larger files, the disc must be reformatted. For Windows, it should be reformatted to NTFS.
