If this happened after formatting windows do the following:

WARNING: This is really "dangerous" and you can end up that windows will not start.. WHILE FOLLWING THE STEPS DO NOT RESTART COMPUTER UNTIL IT SAYS SO..

Steps...............

- Log on as an Administrator.
- Go to start, run
- type Regedt32.exe
- Click OK
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
- Highlight MountedDevices.
- click the right mouse, click Permissions.
- Check to make sure Administrators have full control.
- Quit Regedt32.exe ( you can simply close it)

- Go to run
- type Regedit.exe.
- Click OK
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
- Find the drive letter you want to change to (new). Look for "\DosDevices\C:".
- Right-click \DosDevices\C:, and then click Rename.

- Rename it to an unused drive letter "\DosDevices\Z:". (This will free up drive letter C: to be used later.)
- Find the drive letter you want changed. Look for "\DosDevices\D:".
- Right-click \DosDevices\D:, and then click Rename.
- Rename it to the appropriate (new) drive letter "\DosDevices\C:".
- Click the value for \DosDevices\Z:, click Rename, and then name it back to "\DosDevices\D:".
- Quit Regedit.exe

Again run Regedt32.exe
- Change the permissions back to the previous setting for Administrators (this should probably be Read Only).

- Type in D:\boot.ini in Run in Start menu and press enter
- Somewhere in file there should be written "partition(1 or 2)".. If the number is 1 change it to 2. If the number is 2 change it to 1..
- Save the file

- Restart the computer.

PS: Please rate..

You would want to delete all partitions from the disk. That will get the raw space back. From there, partition; then, format. If you need more help, please ask, but from the experience level able; it sounds like you are right on track.

Hard Drive lost capacity

You cannot just 'loose' most of the capacity on a hard drive unless you have some serious issue and if that was the case, I would not even recommend you using it! What I suspect, because of its size, is that you are only seeing one of the formatted (recovery) partition. In order to use the rest of the hard disk, with the proviso that you want to keep the existing small partition, you need to create and format additional partitions. This is not a trivial task, but the following is the summary on where to find the facility: Control Panel -> Admistrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management -> Your Hard disk will be displayed with all existing partitions: after which you can use the context menu to delete/create partitions, Format partitions and assign a drive letter so that you can use the formatted partitions. Hope it helps: let me know how you go!

160gb - but ensure the bios is up to date and check the motherboard manual as that will or should explain about maximum capacity of hard drives but am sure it should be fine.

If it is not and does not detect all of it you can partition the partitions into smaller amounts ie 80 gb partitions each ?

WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.

System can detect Fujitsu MHY2160BH : 160GB HDD, but cant install

it seems that your computer might have a SATA hard drive which could not be detectable by windows xp, try to install vista it will detect it easily.

otherwise use dm (disk manager) for detection and partition.

Loss hard disc capacity

Did you happen to re-install XP before this happened? WinXP prior to SP1 can only "see" HD's up to 127G, so that might cause your problem...make sure SP1 or SP2 is installed, or try Partition Magic and see if that helps.

Hi there! I think it's not possible to replace the diode as these components are machine soldered to the board. If a machine soldering facility is available to you, you could possibly replace the diode (choose the same diode model adjacent to the one which is damaged. All the best to u.

Maxtor 500gb internal hard drive

Hi,

To fix/restore to full capacity, you may need to delete the existing partition and re-partition then reformat again.

Most old computers have limitations on the CMOS/BIOS as to how big the capacity of the HD that it can recognize.  Windows however would recognize big HD size and therefore can partition, format and check.

Alternately, a third party disk utility program may be used such as Partition Magic.

Hope this be of some use/help. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
