If this happened after formatting windows do the following:

WARNING: This is really "dangerous" and you can end up that windows will not start.. WHILE FOLLWING THE STEPS DO NOT RESTART COMPUTER UNTIL IT SAYS SO..

Steps...............

- Log on as an Administrator.
- Go to start, run
- type Regedt32.exe
- Click OK
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
- Highlight MountedDevices.
- click the right mouse, click Permissions.
- Check to make sure Administrators have full control.
- Quit Regedt32.exe ( you can simply close it)

- Go to run
- type Regedit.exe.
- Click OK
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
- Find the drive letter you want to change to (new). Look for "\DosDevices\C:".
- Right-click \DosDevices\C:, and then click Rename.

- Rename it to an unused drive letter "\DosDevices\Z:". (This will free up drive letter C: to be used later.)
- Find the drive letter you want changed. Look for "\DosDevices\D:".
- Right-click \DosDevices\D:, and then click Rename.
- Rename it to the appropriate (new) drive letter "\DosDevices\C:".
- Click the value for \DosDevices\Z:, click Rename, and then name it back to "\DosDevices\D:".
- Quit Regedit.exe

Again run Regedt32.exe
- Change the permissions back to the previous setting for Administrators (this should probably be Read Only).

- Type in D:\boot.ini in Run in Start menu and press enter
- Somewhere in file there should be written "partition(1 or 2)".. If the number is 1 change it to 2. If the number is 2 change it to 1..
- Save the file

- Restart the computer.

PS: Please rate..

Tip

How to properly setup a single hard drive for Windows.

Hello Windows user, setting up Windows on your hard drive is easy, but there is a better way to setup Windows so you will never have problems later, (especially XP users), So before you start setting up Windows, I suggest you partition your hard drive to 2 (or 3) partition, one for the system (usually this is drive C:), one for your data (this is drive D:). Partitioning simply divides your hard drive to several sections, the main advantage is in case your windows system goes bad, or get infected by a virus, you can easily back up your important documents, simply copy all your important files to drive D: (drive D: is not erased if you setup Windows on drive C:)

f08f0b4.gif

for example:
To create a partition, on an XP setup, using a 160GB hard drive, divide your 160GB Hard Drive to 2, Press C to create a partition see picture. 80GB for windows system files and 80GB for data files.

Never setup the entire Windows on drive C: alone. create 2 partition. So before you choose where to setup Windows, there is an option to create another partition, input how much storage space you need for the partition in our example 80GB on a 160 GB drive. then proceed to setup Windows on drive C:. (at this point there are two drives, C: and D:)

On Windows Vista, although the backup is automatic, its much wiser to partion your hard drive.

160GB st3160215a shows on 40 gb on my p4vmm2 v8.1 mboard.

It might be partitioned to 40 GB.

Restart the computer, go to the setup page and look for the hard drive and check the size indicated there. If the size is 160GB, you will have to create another partition in Windows (I assuming your are using XP). Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools.
Look for the Disk Manager and Select your Disk. It should have a 40GB primary partition and 120GB of unpartitioned space.
Just right click it and select create and extended partition.

Good luck

Reinstall software to use my 160GB freeAgent Go USB

Hi, I am assuming that you are referring to a USB based external hard drive called Free Agent, by Seagate I think.

Which operating system are you using ?

Windows XP has native support for USB, and it should automatically detect the hard drive when you plug it in.
It should NOT require any other software to access the drive.

if not:
1) Check that the HD is powered up
2) Try a different USB cable
3) Try a different USB socket

4) Make sure that the HARD drive is correctly formatted:
i.e. Assuming you are running Windows XP
(Vista should have similar facilities)

Goto to the Control Panel -->
Double click on Administrative Tools
Double click on Computer Management
Look down, under storage,
Click on "Disk Management"
Give it a couple seconds to search for drives,
and to populate the list ...

Check to see if the external disk appears in the list:
It should be partitioned with an EXTENDED partition,
containing a LOGICAL drive, and formatted with NTFS.

If necessary, partition and format the drive, assuming
you have not already done so, and the drive does not
contain any data.

If the drive did previously contain your data, you can
either loose the data and re-format it, or you can hire
a data recovery company to repair the damaged drive.

Cant reboot win.98se after using partition magic 6.0 to merge adjacent partition to c. drive

how large the capacity of your hard disk drive? it is possible that would be the problem it is too dangerous that it will lead your hard disk to crash the system and damage the disk itseld that can create bad sectors on your disk. If you want to partition your hard drive, run the FDISK utility instead.

Internal hd ata

If I am right on this one the 4600 can only take a 250gig hd But I was wondering if you could partion the HD to 236.7 gigs twice so the computer only recognizes the 236.7 gig hd you will see two drives in my computer once you do just format both partitions unless you have another hd and then you will see three drives just do the ones you installed or you may loose your operating system, I don't even know if that will work, but I think it is worth a try seems you already have the 500gig drive, can't hurt to try, I sure hope this help some what.,
