Atlantis maytag dryer stops spinning

I replaced the drum rollers. Now the dryer starts running fine but as it warms up it stops spinning the drum

After I replaced the one of the drum rollers, the dryer ran two loads thru without a problem. On the third load, I noticed a hum that wasn't there before and also a burning smell like something was stuck. When I opened the dryer door, I noticed that the drum had stopped spinning. So I popped the whole thing open again to make sure the belt was still in place. It looked fine. So I took the whole thing apart again and replaced the second drum roller. I didn't do it the first time because I couldn't get the snap ring off. This time I had the right tools. After replacing the second drum roller, I started another load. Again it ran without a problem. The next day, I tried another load. This time about 5 minutes after it started, I noticed the hum and the smell so I turned it off. I let it sit for 20 minutes or so. Then I tried it again, this time with the door open so I could watch. The drum seems to turn slow. Sure enough after a few minutes the drum stopped spinning, the hum started and the burnt smell was back. I haven't turned it back on since. I'm not sure what else to try.

Ok. Tonight I solved the problem. To do this repair, I watched several different videos on how to replace the drum rollers on my Atlantis Maytag MDC6400AYW Electric Dryer. All of them said that when replacing the belt to put the smooth side against the drum. For this particular model, that is completely wrong. The belt goes on with the ridges to the drum side. This so that the ridges will line up with the motor shaft. The motor shaft has grooves on it that need to line up with the grooves on the belt. If the flat side in toward the drum, the grooves will be away from the grooves on the motor shaft. This is bad. It is why my dryer stopped spinning. The reason that the first to loads ran without trouble is that they were very light loads. The third load was much larger and put more weight in the drum and made it harder for the belt to pull the drum around. Anyway the problem is solved.

SOURCE: change rollers on a Maytag Neptune Dryer

You have to work from the front. Pull the top then the front then you will be able to see everything. Pretty self explanatory.

SOURCE: Changing the drum rollers on a Maytag MDE4000AYW Neptune Dryer..

The instructions above are perfect for most Maytag Dryers, but the Neptune MDE4000AYW is built differently from most. To open it, undo the two screws that run through the door hinges, and remove the door, then undo the two other screws that are on the opposite side of the doorway. With these four screws out, you can lift the front panel UP and out. Make sure you unplug the dryer first :-)

SOURCE: Maytag Atlantis dryer no heat

The heating element and thermostat are located behind the front panel of the dryer. you will need to remove the door, then the retaining screws. the heater / element is located on the left side as you are facing the front of the dryer and has to sheet meta screws (upper back top / and front bottom) which will need to be removed. the unit has several colored wires for the thermostat and switch. remove these (remember which goes where) and the enitre unit will come out easily.

Drive Motor

The dryer drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. If the dryer stops the motor might be defective. If the dryer stops and the dryer motor makes a humming noise there might be something caught in the blower wheel, or the drum might be binding. Try removing the belt from the motor and checking the blower wheel for obstructions. Also try rotating the drum by hand with the belt off, it should rotate freely. If the drum doesn't turn freely, determine what is causing it to bind. The dryer motor can't be tested easily. If the drum turns freely and the blower wheel is clear, and yet the dryer still keeps stopping mid-cycle the motor may be defective. it will need to be replaced. It is not serviceable.

Drum Roller Axle

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If the roller axles are worn out the rollers may not spin freely which can overload the motor and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, remove the belt and spin the drum, it should spin freely. If not, check the rollers and roller shafts.

Drum Roller

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If they are worn out or start binding the motor can get overloaded and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, check to be sure the drum turns freely with the belt removed. If not, check the rollers. Do not lubricate the rollers or roller shaft, lubrication will attract lint and cause the roller bearings to wear out faster. If the rollers don't turn freely, replace them. The roller shaft can often be reused, unless it has worn down. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.

Drum Slide, Glide, or Pad

The front of the dryer drum is supported by small pieces of plastic-like material. As the drum rotates, it slides on these plastic pieces. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, it may be that one or more of these plastic slides or glides has worn out. When they wear out the drum can start binding and put strain on the motor. The motor then shuts down and the dryer stops. Check the glides for wear and replace as needed.

Drum Bearing

The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. Over time this bearing will wear out and may cause several different problems. If the dryer stops during the cycle it may be that this drum bearing has worn out and is putting too much strain on the motor. If the belt is removed and the drum spins freely, the drum bearing is probably not worn out. If the drum bearing is worn out, there may be some grinding or squealing, and the drum will be hard to turn.

Dryness Control Board

The dryness control board shuts off the dryer when the clothes have reached the level of dryness selected by the user. If the dryer stops too early, the dryness control board might be defective. This is not very common and other possibilities should be checked first.

My dryer (maytag atlantis) has started making a loud clunking noise with each revolution. its still drying fine but sounds terrible. any thoughts?

A loose belt will allow the drum to slip when clothes hit the paddles in the drum. It sometimes sounds like a pair of tennis shoes are in the dryer when it slips and is usually rythymic.

These machines also use drum rollers that can make a racket when they go bad.

Maytag dryer (LDE5914ACE) loud slipping/thumping sound

yes, it's called a blower wheel... it is what blows the air into the dryer to blow out the humidity through the vent... it has a D fitting and as you use it, the D rounds out and the 'squirrel cage' stops spinning and begins to slip... if you continue to use the dryer without replacing this, you could burn up your dryer motor... it will just over heat....

My Maytag Atlantis dryer is vibrating and shaking terribly. It is still drying the clothes though. What can I do to fix this problem?

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIRS
Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots or wear on them replace them. If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem. I will include these two websites for parts and further help: http://www.partselect.com/ http://www.appliancepartspros.com/index.aspx Both also have chat assistance 24/7. It is making a horrible squealing nose when it runs and takes forever to dry. it is a maytag atlantis 7600 electric dryer.

The squealing noise you are describing sounds like the drum rollers in need of lubrication or replacement.
The problem with the drying could be a faulty heating coil and or faulty thermostats.
If your machine is a front loading machine:
Unplug the power cord to the dryer, remove the front of the machine, this will expose the drum and belt, then remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers.
Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in one Oil. If the drum roller is worn or have flat spots on them, then you may need to replace them.
Remove the back of the machine and this will expose the air tube, find the air tube from the blower to the drum, normally inside this tube you will find the heating coil and thermostats.
Good luck, I hope this helps

Dryer noise

A drum support wheel bearing could need lubrication or be replaced.  Also some drum support wheels have a rubber coating that wears off causing misalignment and noise.  Possibly drum gasket (sometimes felt material) where drum meets rear panel is worn allowing metal-to-metal contact--should be replaced.

most of the time your rollers and belt are fine 1st thing to check would be the idler pully which keeps the tension on the belt so the tub spins

Squeaky dryer

This could be attributal to a dry spot in the idler pulley or 1 of the rear drum rollers.
