Maxtor back-up drive does not appear full but everytime Retrospect Express HD (Dantz) starts up it automatically attempts to reclaim disc space. Whilst reclaiming disc space on 300 GB Maxtor One Touch II, retrospect express HD encounters following error: "assertion failure at tbuffer.cpp - 373" . I am unable to back-up computer. Have already tried "RegCure" program without success. Please help.

No info. on problem at those sites

Thank-you kindly for solving my problem. The solution was to delete the catalogue file which then allowed back-up to proceed.

I would try what was mentioned, if that doesn't work, just format the drive, and if your computer is running the way you want it to, just do a fresh restore. By the way I use Acronis, or Snapshot. I like snapshot because of it's ease of use

You will need to reformat it for the Mac, and yes that will erase all the data currently on the drive.

If the drive is formatted FAT32 (not NTFS) then it's possible to partition the drive if it's not too fragmented. You could do this on the PC using any Windows compatible partitioning software. You could then use one partition for the PC and one for the Mac. However, you could not boot from the partition used for the Mac and you cannot use it with Time Machine.

    The Catalog File

, a file saved on your hard disk, is an index of the files on the storage media
of a Backup Set. The Catalog File lets you view the contents of a Backup Set
without having to have the media on hand. A Catalog File is required
for all operations that copy files to and from a Backup Set. If a Catalog File
    is
    lost
    or damaged,
Retrospect Express can rebuild a Catalog File from the media. Catalogs typically
use four megabytes of disk space for every ten thousand files.

You may back up as many source volumes as you like to a single
Backup Set. For example, you could have a single Backup Set as the
backup destination for your computer's internal hard disk, your
external hard disk, and a file server.

The hard drive has probably a bad sector, use a backup hard disk to copy all data then format the hard drive and copy data back.

Reg Cure will not help, try instead downloading and installing the latest update for the software here: emcinsignia.com/supportupdates/updates/retroexpress.

If that does not work, then the same problem may be caused by a logical problem on disk, in that case run a diskchk procedure from Windows, or move backup and format the drive.

Check also this page on Dantz website:

this page on the Dantz web site:
Users of Retrospect Express HD may see this error when Retrospect attempts to reclaim disk space during a backup.

To fix this error, delete the Restore Point catalog file.

    1) On your destination hard drive (the Maxtor drive) locate the folder called “Retrospect Restore Points”.

    2) Inside that folder delete the file named RestorePoint.rbc

    3) Open Express HD or push the button on your Maxtor drive to begin
a backup. Retrospect Express HD will recreate the RestorePoint.rbc
    file, fixing this error.

I had the same problem. I looked up in Maxtor customer support and found the following:

When you start Retrospect Express HD it keeps hanging on Updating status.
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=188051

Problem:
There is a bug in Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 that could contribute to the Updating status… error you get with Retrospect Express HD.
Solution: To solve this problem upgrade to Retrospect HD 1.1.
Please see Answer ID 2647: Installing the EMC Retrospect Express HD 1.1 Upgradefor the download and installation instructions.
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus Edition or ZoneAlarm can also be attributed to this hang condition. Adding Retrospect HD as an exception in McAfee Personal Firewall Plus does not resolve the problem. Please see
Answer ID 2152for more information.

Sorry if the links don't wok but ou can find all of this on the maxtor site.

good luck!

The internet security application should not inhibit the back up, though i would use software from the same manufacter for both purposes if possible. Try reinstalling retrospect, or checking the homepage for any updates.
