Check to see if the pulley has a screw in the end holding on the outer flange of the pulley. Some models have to remove this and slide the new belt on then refit the flange.

SOURCE: Dewalt735 Planer will not drive wide boards thru planer

I use denatured alcohol to clean the rollers on my Makita, and it doesn't seem to have harmed them over the years, but I do this infrequently. If your rollers are coated with pitch and or chips they won't feed well, no matter how they're adjusted.
(I don't think this planer has the capability to adjust the spring tension on the rollers, but I could be wrong.) You can consult the manual online at http://www.dewaltservicenet.com/Products/DocumentView.aspx?productid=22538&typeId=7605&documentId=21151
If you can attach dust collection to the planer it will probably help.
Also, the direction of the grain makes a difference when trying to plane boards as dense as poplar, (which has a kind of weedy, roey grain sometimes, that would prefer to tear out.)
For example, if you were feeding the board from right to left of the page, the grain on the side of the board should look like this//////// instead of this\\\\\\, which will have a tendency to tear out and jam the planer. If you can make sure the boards feed through in the right direction, this may solve your problems.
I heartily recommend the wax, as well. And possibly compressed air with a nozzle to blow chips aside.
Also consider the length of the boards and the effect of the drop weight on the planer's rollers if there is not an extension roller in place (or a worker) to hold the board as it makes its pass through the machine.
If you feed the board with the cup side down to begin with, taking light passes to smooth the top face, then flipping it over end over end and feeding the other side in the opposite direction, flattening first one face, then the other, you might have better luck.
Aside from all this, a surface planer isn't a jointer, which is designed to straighten & flatten boards, and portable planers in general won't perform as well as industrial models of the same capacity.
If you will continue to be running a lot of stock through your machine, you might want to consider investing in a used 13" Rockwell or Delta or some such cast iron planer, with rollers top and bottom to facilitate movement of course material. They aren't as portable, but might save time in the long run.
On a final note, there's no replacement for sharp knives. Even the best planer won't drive stock well when the knives get dull.
Best of luck!

Go to the Dewalt site and download the blow up of the machine and the parts list. Also get the manual and do the instructions to replace the knives. Take a look at the unit exposed and take the leg apart that is causing the problem and replace level.

There is a wheel on the left hand side. Typically, it won't let you LOWER it below what that wheel is set to, but that may have something to do with it.

My Dewalt 735 planer won't turn on. I blew the house fuse a few times, it would start after I came out. Now it won't start at all and it's been a couple days

The 735 draws 15 amps, which is the rating of typical lighting circuits in homes. The receptical in the wall is sometimes 15 amps although those circuits usually have 20 amp breakers. Since you said "fuse", it might be a bad fuse or even the wiring between the two. Circuit breakers go bad also. If you can confirm the receptical supplies voltage, it is time to check the 735.

Unknown if the device has a termal switch inside. I doubt it would go bad, but you implied a resting period allowed it to run several more times after the fuse in the basement was replaced. If it reset once, it should do it again. If you can find a diagram, there might be a fuse inside, but someone would have to take it apart to check.

A motor can get so hot that a solder joint inside can let loose and it will never run again. Sometimes the coil (windings of the motor) can short out (melt together) and this will increase how much current goes through it and also generate more heat and melt more windings together. Besides producing a smell, your house fuse would burn out real quick.

I had a chuckle over your 2nd sentence but I dare not say why. If it started after you came out (of the house), why did you not run it for a longer time?

A motor requires more power at the instant of turn on. 15 amps of running current will require 20 amps or more when starting. "slow blow" fuses (vs quick action) and circuit breakers can deal with the short period over current requirements.

Dewalt 735 planer trips overload a lot. New blades, thin cut no difference. Run it, without wood, it trips. Overload switch? Checked everthing. Turns free with chains off. Bluespook

id check the feed roller drive or feed rollers them selfs I find due to pressure there under most times they get flat spots in them from sitting makes for a hard start to planer

its best to back off tension rollers when storing these and keep them bearings lubed up well
and yes it happens to sealed bearings too

Power? circuit breaker? Plug? Owner's manual. Troubleshooting
Does the motor hum? if so you have something jamed in the planer cutter.
