I had a similar problem with the "fancy" curved face-plate on my Aspire
desktop. I bought a generic (Hi-Val X36)CD drive and removed the door
from the tray before installing it in the pc. I was able to reuse the
door from the original drive by trimming the back plastic in a couple of
places and then supergluing it to the tray. It looks just like the
original configuration. I did take a careful look at where the open
button was located before shopping for a new drive. Mine worked out very
well but I have learned that my next pc should be in a nice simple mini
tower.

Acer sent out a Atapi CD- Rom 32X to replace my defective one.
Everything lines up like the original. I have also seen where any of
the Memorex ones will do the same thing, so take your pick.

I was in the same position. I bought an Acer 640P (40X). It works
fine, but I had to remove the frontplate. The eject button doesn't
quite line up properly with the button on the case, although it is
workable, and I had to leave the slot on the case open because the new
drive isn't curved and so it doesn't really 'fit the system.' (I stuff
the frontplate from the original drive in the slot to help keep dust
out.)
In other words, if you don't mind kludgy semi-pain-in-the-ass setups,
just get an Acer replacement off the shelf. If you want it to be
right, good luck (I gave up waiting for a reply from Acer on this
topic, which is why I opted for the above).
