Running two operating systems

I have a desktop PC. When my power supply went down on the laptop, I removed the hard drive and put it in the mad dog to get files from it. Now my desktop loads from the laptop start up. How can I fix this?

I am not sure how to explain what's going on. This is why I am seeking help. The system seems to be confused on how to load. I want to press the "F12" key at start up to reformat my system. It has the start up disk burned on to the hard drive. System is asking for start up disk. I have used the "F12" key once, before I plugged in the portable hard drive from my lap top.

OH I understand, sorry I misread.Anyways two things, set bios to boot from main HDD (F2 at startup) OR unplug the external and boot to OS normally, then plug back in once logged in and at desktop. You don't want to format anything if you need files off of it, if you do want to format (assuming you have the files off of it) once into windows just go to Disk management (admin tools or right-click on computer>manage>disk management) and you can format it that way :)

SOURCE: Laptop receiving message: No operating system found

That error usually indicates one of two things, your file system is corrupt and the master boot record or partition tables have corrupted.... or, in light of a liquid being spilled, some possibly got into the laptop.

I'm not sure right off the top of my head, but I think the hard drive has an access door on the bottom. Which you can remove a couple screws to remove the cover. I would visually inspect under that cover, and other covers if any while your at it, to check for any signs that liquid got in it.

SOURCE: HP Pavillion dv6700 - black screen

Do the following without the battery inserted.

Let the computer sit with no battery for 24 hours. Do not put the battery in at all. Try using your original memory stick ONLY, with no hard drive and see if it will POST. If it does, insert the hard drive and try again. Could be the new memory...

Another thing you can try is reseating the processor. Turn the ZIF screw, take the processor out (WATCH THE PINS!!) and put back in GENTLY. Leave the memory in the computer, hard drive removed, try to power on.

These models have been known for bad motherboards. Contact HP and arrange to send it in. If you do enough digging on HPs website, you'll find the service advisory.

Power went out , came back on, computer will not start. What can I do?

Check fuses, and if the power supply fan and the CPU fans are running then, you will most probably need to re-install your operating system. (sometimes a power supply failure will cause a corrupt hard drive, it can even kill you Power supply or hard drive.

Hard drive not found inspiron 1545

Either the hard drive has gone bad or the disk controller is having issues recognizing it.

Remove the power cord, then remove the cables from the drive and put them back if it's a desktop. If it's a laptop, remove the power cord, remove the battery, then remove the cover that houses the hard drive on the bottom of the laptop. Remove the hard drive from the bay, then put it back.

First off turn off the computer then turn it back on and watch for which key to hit to get into the System Setup or Bios. You want to go there and look at the hard drive and make sure it is set to Auto for the primary drive. Also look thru the bios settings and see if you see anything that references Large Drive Support or AHCI. If you see AHCI toggle it to another option. If you changed anything in the bios, save it and try rebooting.

If the system still does not recognize the hard drive, see if you can run the Check Disk Utility. I've seen time when it looked like the operating system was gone from the disk, but Check Disk repaired it.
To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem your hard drive might have crashed.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Cant operate bios after reformatting the unit

If you cannot operate the BIOS, the best way is to reset the CMOS battery which require a very good technician to tear down the unit. Here are the steps:

Turn off laptop

remove cables and battery

Press and hold power button for 5 secs.

Remove screws in the edges of the laptop

Remove Hard drive, Optical Drive and Power supply fan

Press the CMOS battery (circle shaped silver coating) upwards so that it would disengage and put it back in...

Put back the Hard drive, Optical Drive and Power supply fan

Put back screws in the edges of the laptop

Put in cables and battery

Turn on laptop and the BIOS will be reset successfully...

My Mad Dog drive buzzes every half second and the light flickers with the buzz. I don't know what that means, do you?

this happens to my external drives if they are not getting enough power thru the usb sockets.
Usually the rear sockets on the backplate(desktop pc) have more power.
You can also use a y cable that has 2 sockets on one end to get power from 2 usb sockets

My Mad Dog external hard drive does not show up as a drive. How do I get this to show so I can access my information.

Connect it to a different computer, to see if the device is working at all.

If not, and if the Mad Dog is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Otherwise, disassemble the casing, remove the disk-drive,
and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK. This would imply that the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the casing is the problem.

I have a Mad dog case for my old hard drive that I have hooked to my new computer. The old drive still has operating system on it. It seems to be conflicting with current computers system. It used to work...

If you just want to use old drive for data, here is a way to get rid of old OS. Put your CD for the OS (any will do, but XP works best for me.) Make sure you have CD as a boot drive. When it says "push any key to boot from CD" hit the space bar. Let it go through the motions and when it finally is ready, pick install Windows. It will ask you to pick a partition, and go to Mad dog hard drive. Click on remove partition, and when this is done, eject CD and shut down computer. You can now use FDISK to create partition and format it. Windows will not let you delete an operating system, but you can fool it into letting you this way. Hope this helps!
