You could download the latest bios version from the compaq website then when your computer starts up you will have to enter your bios. This is different for every computer but its usually accessed by pressing delete when the startup screen appears. Once in the bios change the disk boot priority to include the flash drive

Quickly press F10 or F11 after booting your system, which will bring out the system setup environment, look for system power and boot setup to set up where your system to start booting from, be it your harddisk, CD drive or USB, select the one that you want first, the save the setting and restart the system.

Need help figuring this out. Complex!

Configuring your computer to boot from a USB drive allows you to boot into a separate operating system stored on a bootable USB drive.
This is handy when needing to troubleshoot a computer or access the hard drive without booting into the main operating system.
In order to boot from a USB drive, your computer's motherboard and BIOS must support USB booting.
If they do, then a simple tweak to the BIOS settings is all you need to do.

Shut down your computer and allow it to completely power off.
Insert your USB drive into an open USB port on your computer.
For ease of access, try to insert it into a front port if you have one.
Turn on your computer and enter the BIOS menu.
When your computer first boots, the manufacturer's logo will appear on the screen.
On the bottom of the screen is a note telling you which button to press to enter the BIOS.
Quickly press the button to enter the BIOS menu.
All manufacturers are slightly different, but some common buttons for entering the BIOS are F2, F10, F12, ESC and DEL.
If you are unsure, refer to the owner's manual that accompanied your computer.
Use the arrow keys to scroll down to the boot device menu.
It will be titled differently on different computers, but look for something like "Boot Order" or "Boot Devices."
Press the enter key to enter the boot menu.
Scroll down to "USB Drive" and set it as the first boot device.
Exit out of the BIOS menu and reboot your computer.
When your computer boots up it will boot from the USB drive first.

Does a compaq presario 5000 support flash drives

Yes, it does.

The Compac Presario 5000 series have between 2 and 4 USB 1.1 Ports.
Note here that the ports are version 1.1, which is considerably slower that version 2.0.
USB 1.1: 12 MBits/second
USB 2.0: 480 MBits/second

Aside form the speed, they are both compatible with your computer.
