DVD Drive Not Functioning Properly

I insert a DVD, it is not detected by either windows media or vista. I then try to open either program manually and still nothing...what DOES happen is a high pitch buzz/whirling or grinding sound. When I view the DVD drive from the side...the light flashes momentarily and then when the high pitch noise begins...the light turns off. This happend a couple days ago and I went to some link to download a dvd driver and it work fine for 2 days only. Any suggestions?

First off, disc drives don't need a 3rd party driver; they all follow the same interface standard because none of them have a patent on CD or DVD technology.

However, you can download firmware updates from the manufacturer which fixes bugs the device may have. There are also applications you can install that bypass codec restrictions in the firmware. (e.g. AnyDVD, 1 Click DVD, etc)

The sounds you described are the direct result of a calibration error. This calibration is not controlled by any driver; it is controlled by the firmware chip.

It's likely that whatever you installed changed the read/write mode (DAO, ATAPI, RAW, etc) being used in your system which may have been incompatible with the drive firmware; overburning CD's and DVD's can have the same effect. Unfortunately, your drive is probably "bricked."

You can try download a firmware update from your computer manufacturer or the drive manufacturer.

Laptop asking to insert media boot disc and not got one

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Dell studio 1555 doesn't read DVD or CD , when I insert CD / DVD it looks like it is reading the media but when I click on Drive icon, it ejects the media.

First reinstall the DVD driver to see if the DVD drive works.
If not then -
Try removing the DVD drive and inserting it back to make sure it properly connected then boot up the laptop and go into the BIOS and see it the DVD drive is detected, if the DVD drive is not detected then the DVD drive is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Open "My Computer".
Insert a CD-disk into the drive, while holding-down the LEFT-SHIFT key.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Remove the CD-disk.
Does the label under the CD-icon change?
Insert a DVD-disk into the drive, while holding-down the LEFT-SHIFT key.

Remove the DVD-disk.

If no changes in the icon, after the above, it's time to spend $40 to replace the "dead" drive with a new CD/DVD writer.

Norton 360 install has replaced/overridden DVD drive

Hi, I can certainly understand how you feel and hope I can help.

error 19 isnt necesarily a corrupt driver, it can be 2 drivers trying to use the same resource (as in norton's backup drive and your cd drive, for example)

Try this - Click the start button, right click on "Computer", select "Properties", then click "Device Manager" in the upper left hand corner.

Open the bit that says "CD/DVD Drives" and try right clicking on the drives there and selecting "Update Driver Software". This will probably do nothing. Don't worry, I didnt really expect it to. Now right click on the drives, and select "Delete" and then reboot. This will reset the drivers for ya.

This fix usually DOES work. Most of the time. If it doesnt work, try the ones below.

My emachines dvd rom is not detecting a dvd in the drive

Dissamble the dvd rom from pc. Open it and clean the laser with a soft cloth or try a dvd lens cleaner disk. You can buy it from any hardware shop. Connect the cables correctly. Start with a fresh dvd disk. If your pc still can't detect dvd disc, replace dvd rom with a new one.

Optiarc DVD Drive does not work anymore.

Try uninstalling the device in the Device Manager, then restart the computer. See if Windows redetects the device and reinstall it. Next, try accessing the BIOS and see if the BIOS sees it, and be sure its enabled there. If both of these options fail, open the machine and make sure that the drive has a working power connector attached. If the connector is bad, switch the power lead over to a working connector.

Sony DVD-RW DW-D56A drive playing up

I am not posting a solution, but may be the same problem.
I have dell inspiron 510m with DVD - RW sony A 56
It had burnt one DVD till now, but it can NOT burn any more DVDs.
I have tried burning using windows XP-SP2, Nero 6, Nero 8, burn my files 3.01 BUT no use. The only thing I got is different error messages.
I changed many types of DVD-Rom, from sony, benq..trying to rule out the storge media itself as source of error, but again no use.
Astonishingly, it works a CD-ROM Burner very well.
Any suggestions?
