HK AVR255 goes into PROTECT mode

I have HK AVR 255 with HKTS 30 speakers. The system was working fine until I encountered the PROTECT mode problems since last 3-4 months. As soon as I switch the AVR on, it goes into the protect mode. I have tried the following : 1. Disconnected all the speaker wires/HDMI cables etc and checked the AVR in bare mode, it still goes into PROTECT mode. 2. However, when I took it to the dealer's place, it switched on in the bare mode;which was quite surprising! 3.I have still been able to make it work by following these steps : -Select Zone 2 on the AVR remote -Switch on the AVR in the Cable/Sat mode -Switch the Zone Selection to Zone 1 -Select Cable Sat/DVD or any other mode and it works ..... I am unable to figure out as to what the problem is still ..Any suggestions ?

SOURCE: Audio problems using a Playstation 3

First try ensuring that "OPT 1, 2, or 3" function is selected depending which one you are using on the H/K 146 (see manual for selection instructions). Next please ensure that the PS3 audio out set to "optical" (Settings/sound settings/audio output settings/digital out+DD 5.1). That should help.

My Harmon Kardon AVR 2600 goes to protect mode when powered up. After many tries it will fire up but at times it's up to twenty times. I did load the software upgrade 6 months and it has been fine

Check all speaker wiring for shorts, if okay! there is a problem in the audio output stage of the unit or the protection circuit is not working properly. I would suggest a pro to evaluate.

I have an HK AVR 355 system, that worked just fine. Yesterday I tried to hook up a new TV, and ended up taking a few cable out since they were not imoportaint any more and only used HDMI cable. Now when I...

Obviously you removed (or disturbed) something that was really necessary to the DVD's digital audio path. "Doesn't work" is pretty non-specific.

Do a web search for "HK AVR 355 manual" and download it. Then read the part about assigning digital audio sources and speaker configuration setup.

Look at the Troubleshooting Guide part that mentions the Channel Indicator Display (page 33).

HK AVR-247 protect mode

This is an indication of an internal problem. Typically this is shorted output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the $25-$40 range for this repair.

Reciver goes into protect mode as soon as I turn it on.

Remove speaker wires and try again. If it still goes into protect mode, the problem is internal...shorted power transistors or some other fault. Check fuses also.

most of the receivers come with a cooling fan inside see if its working they usually work when you turn the volume up,, if its working that means you are playing it to loud if you lower the volume a little it will play just fine..( if the fan inside is not working thats the reason it goes into protect mode and it means you must have it repaired,, it goes into protect mode to prevent furter damage to the unit or the speakers,,

Resistors can fail from being turned up to hire, wires getting bumped together or against metal, speakers being wrong ohms, or just plainly overheating.

HK AVR25 MKII goes on and off numerous times on cold power up

The relay on the PWR SUPPLY board clicks once when the PWR switch is turned on then 2 to 5 sec. later it clicks again and 'off' it goes.
The small transformer ( standby power) on the board appears to be leaking crud (looks like wood glue) all along one edge.
Can I bypass this relay to see if the power transformer is 'ok'?

HK AVR 120 (left speaker not working)

Hi, your analysis are right, your speakers has no problem, the problem is in your receiver.
there are several factors that affects it, try some troubleshooting: and answer this questions:

1. During this event, what is the source of your INPUT audio signal?
Have you tried to replaced your RCA cables that connected to the source of your receiver?

If YES, then problem really exist in the internal system of your receiver. may be you have overdrive your receiver unintentionally, which cause the Power Amplifier to malfunction,

On this event, I would suggest that you bring your receiver to it's Service Center for repair,
This problem needs technical troubleshooting of a qualified technician.
