Motherboard failure Hi I have been told that my motherboard in my Compaq Presario , which is 2 .5 yrs old and has not been used for 1 year , has failed. Can someone please tell me how a motherboard can fail. I bought a new monitor and plugged it into the PC and I got "No Signal" on the screen for a few seconds before it went blank. The monitor is OK on my other PC. I have been quoted 400 AUD / 600 USD for a new motherboard. Is this a reasonable cost? Thanks

Failure of motherboards is usually due to breaking capacitors. A few years ago a capacitor company stole the "recipe" for making capacitors from another company and tried to make their own, unfortunately they did not get the ingredients right and the capacitors started breaking after 2-3 years of use. They sold these capacitors at very cheap prices and a lot of computer companies and power supply makers bought them. This is easy to diagnose. Look for capacitors (caps) (they look like little tiny soda cans) on your motherboard (mobo). They should be perfectly flat on top and not bulged or swelling or leaking anything. The dead giveaway is the fact that you are not getting a monitor signal and if you listen to your computer as it starts up, a few of the devices may not start (hard drive, etc). A failed video card will also give you "No signal message", but the computer should sound normal when starting up. Mobos are usually expensive to replace because the computer makers have them made especially for them and only order so many. They usually do not have a lot of extras laying around. There are a few companies that will repair broken capacitor issues. Hope this explains why they can fail. They can also fail if overheated (like when a case cooling fan fails), the cpu is overclocked and not cooled down (which raises temps), the power supply fails or by lightning and power surges. Also if you add a bunch of extra components without upgrading the power supply you can suffer underpowered situations.

My compaq f700 laptop won't boot up

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:
Possible causes:

1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
1. Test the compaq f700 ac adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

2.It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

2 beeps = memory problems. Since you get them even after the memory has been replaced then the problem is in the motherboard itself. Check the capacitors for bulging. If you can't find ones or you can't replace them then the motherboard is dead.

The power turns on but it doesn't do anythigng else

It can be due to many factor

1.RAM not decting by Mainboard.
remove the RAM & clean it's legs with a white paper and place it again & try.

2.SMPS failure
Your power supply is not able to give the requirement of the PC due to mal-functioning.Replace the power supply & check.

3. BIOS failure

Reset the PC BiOS to default setting by removing the CMOS battery.Check it again.

4.Motherboard failure

Motherboard may have failed due to power spurge or spike.
Remove your processor & RAM and place it on another motherboard and check if processor & RAM are working or not.If they are working then it's motherboard fault.

A new motherboard for a old compaq presario 5240

You will need a new case and a new power supply. I would replace the memory as well.

Compaq had a tendency to make cases to only fit their boards back then. Youre better off building a new unit and starting over again.
