With any computer this is a question that must be answered by those that provide the driver software. Like the number above (Dimension 3100) you should begin your search here=> Dimension 3100 Drivers that is if you have not altered the driver by putting a different player in the slot. What you need to do is test the drive using the Dell diagnostics. The procedure can be found in the CD/DVD FAQ. Run the "read test". You'll need to insert various disc types during the test.
C drive will show at least 2 partions; one will be about 32mb in size;others will be larger...install windows on one of larger partions; go to dell.com/drivers and download in proper order drivers for your version of windows onto same HDD as windows...if a driver file is not on drive, dell with ask if you want to create one;YES
If you are reinstalling a driver, it is typically best to go with the newest version of that driver. The best way to get the newest drivers is directly from Dell. If your desktop does not have internet without this driver, download the file (as follows) on another computer and move it to your dimension and install (as follows). Browse to Dell's driver download page: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen There will be a service tag somewhere on the tower of your Dell 3100 desktop, type in this service tag on the product identification page. Note: the drivers here may not be applicable if you have upgraded your computer's hardware since purchasing it. Be sure to choose the correct operating system you plan on running on this machine. Under category you can select "Network". This will bring up all of the network adapter drivers. Select the first driver labeled "Dell Utility" which applies to the wireless USB adapter. Choose the "Download" button and save the driver to your computer. Double click this file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the software. Your wireless internet device should now work! Try running the cd that came with the router again, since you reinstalled windows, the configurations for the router have been lost. If this doesn't help let us know and we'll work on it from there.. good luck!
Are you trying to hook up the laptop wirelessly to the pc? because then the pc would need to have a wireless card as well....sounds like I need more info, but if you are trying to do what I think you are, you should just get a wireless router instead, hook the pc tower directly to it via ethernet cable, and then setup the laptop to connect to the router. The router would hook to your dsl or cable router....what service do you have?
