Hi,if your laptop built in windows is not windows 8 or it is a dos version you must download and check the user manual from dell.com to make sure your laptop support windows 8 and has hardware drivers and has minimum hardware requirement for it,
if its dos version and support windows 8 you must get the original version of windows and check the manual to install it;
if its a windows xp or windows 7 version so you must go to dell.com search your laptop serial number and find this message or google it
"how to migrate dell (serial number)laptop from windows 7 or xp to windows 8"
you know, installing a higher version of windows in a laptops is not looks like PCs,this is not a normal upgrade from windows installing process,and every good brands have their own ways to migrate to higher version of windows(of course some of them is looks like each other) but try to find it how to migrate,if you use normal update and skip the recommended points from your laptop manufacturer windows will getting noisy carshy freezy on your laptop
kind regards
