Hello...i have a black gibson les paul custom. Serial number 00117886. what year is it and would this be considered a black beauty? any idea of value too?

The term 'Black Beauty' has been well overused by now. It was originally the 1957 black Les Paul Custom model, but by now is any black Les Paul Custom. In addition Gibson themselves are cashing in by doing reissues, finished to look older.

So if it is a black Les Paul Custom, then yes, it is a Black Beauty, according to someone somewhere. On top of that, Gibson has reused serial numbers, in different years for different models.

If the serial number is stamped on the headstock with 'Made In USA' the guitar was made at the Kalamazoo or Nashville Plant, in 1976.

Those guitars are worth US$3000-4000 depending on condition.

Otherwise it was made at the Nashville Plant, TN, on January 11th, 2007.

Those newer reissue guitars sell for similar prices.

What kinds of woods are used in it an how could I customize the guitar body shape without changing the sound?

Woods used in what..guitar bodies???All types are used...Mahogany, spruce, maple, Ash, basswood, even pine of all things...Or a combination of such woods...Guitars are made of tonewoods...maple has a brighter more biting tone than mahogany which is darker sounding. Same with fretboards and necks. All different types of woods. And changing the shape of the body will effect the sound anyway you change it. Especially by the bridge. It really depends on what you are wanting to do. Tell me whats up and what you are thinking of doing. Set neck...not enjoying being set anymore.

This sometimes happens on older set neck guitars. Chances are its due to the guitar being exposed to fast changing temperatures or humidity. Since the paint is strictly cosmetic, and no one will see it, I'd leave it alone. If it was an American PRS it may be different but I would not worry about it, just be careful when taking the guitar out in cold and hot weather...and let the case adjust with the guitar in it for about 15 minutes before taking it out.
