Press the "ink" button, you will then see "test print" on the display. Press the top of the joystick like (labeled search/speed dial) wheel until the display changes to "cleaning"; then press Set. Press Set one more time to select the color black. Cleaning should start.

You've almost answered your own question! Try ruling out the ink cart first (preferrably with an Original Brother cart). If the cleaning cycle does not resolve it then it's really an engineer job.
Not much else you can do, unless you know how to take apart the machine.
machine needs to go into a cleaning process once you installed new cartridges to identify that there is a new one placed there.it will need 5 cleanings to do that.if you are using refillables or generic cart,then it wont properly mix up with the others causing that specific color not to print
make sure that you are using genuine Brother ink cartridges.what is on the lcd screen of the brother machine?if no cart,remove all cart.reinstall them.if there is an error message,sorry,but you have to replaced.and your brother machine does not have a green cart.it only has cyan(blue),mag(red),yellow and black.there is a way of cleaning it though
It seems that the ink has clogged the whole print head.
Do use original brother ink carts which have special cleaning fluid within the ink.
After that run the manual ink cleaning procedure by pressing ink etc.
Make sure that all carts are placed well and are secured.
Try this: Unplug machine from power. Wait 5 min. Open scanner cover and take the carts out of the holder. Close cover. Plug machine to power. Machine will cycle and demands the carts. Use all NEW carts: Insert carts as demanded and answer question shown on display.
Always print until machine STOPPS printing because of EMPTY cart. Change cart then and machine will print the rest of job! Plz, never change carts when it says NEAR EMPTY: This will cause a lot of trouble ;-)
Please insert an original brother BK cart. In case the printhead is OK the machine should work again. If there is still trouble the printhead might be clogged and cant be fixed anymore due to wrong chemical additives within the generic ink!
When inserted the original brother ink cart run the powerpurge:
press menue then start b/w (blue button) then foutimes arrow-up button. Machine is within the maintanance mode. press 7 then 6 then 3. Display shows PowerP_All. Press start b/w (blue button). Machine runs power cleaning. Press 9 then 9 to leave the maintanance mode. Print a test print sheet.
Check ink cart if it is well placed into the ink cart assy.
Do the cleaning procedure by pressing INK skip the arrow-button down until CLEANING is displayed. Press start mono (blue button). After cleaning cycle you are asked by machine to print a quality test sheet. Do so and follow display instructions.
Do the cleaning procedure a max of three times!
When there still is no BK the printhead either is clogged or dryed out. Sorry, this cant be fixed anymore.
Unplug machinepowercord. Open printer and take all carts out. Plug in power. Machine demands carts. Put new one in: Replace with original ink carts!. When asked push 1 (yes New cart).
If you have used thirdparty carts, there could be a prob due to construticon or ink quality.
In case there is no bk after 3x cleaning cycles anymore, the head is clogged: This happens because the filter in front of the nozzels is clogged by pigmented ink.
DO USE ONLY DYE INK for all types of brother inkjet machines!!!
Did you use third party ink? If the ink is pigmented the filter in front of the printnozzels is clogged and cant be cleaned any more.
What you can try is to buy a brand new original brother ink cart and do the cleaning 3 times. After that do a testsheet printing. In case its OK, your lucky and it was a problem of the cart. If you cant see any blocks (with the original ink used!!!) the printhead is crashed and has to be replaced (BTW: Its cheaper to buy a new mfc)!
Do use only dye ink for brother printers!!!
