Usually when an electric dryer overheats it's because of a defective cycling thermostat or a clogged vent system. Clean any lint from the internal and external ductwork, and/or replace the cycling thermostat (read about cycling thermostats in "Drying is too slow," above).
Drying is too slow It normally takes about 45 minutes for a dryer to dry a full load. If your dryer is taking more than an hour, check these.

Vent
Heating element
Internal ductwork
Cycling thermostat
Vent Frequently there's an obstruction in the vent duct from the dryer to the outside of the house. For the dryer to heat properly, the duct must be clean and clear of lint or any other substance.

Heating element Your dryer's heating element may be partially burned out. If it is, your dryer still heats, but at such a low temperature that it takes three or four times as long to dry the clothes. If the element is partially burned out, replace it.

Internal ductwork Your dryer has some internal ductwork. If it gets clogged, your dryer can't dry properly. In most dryers, to get to the internal ductwork to clear the clog, you have to substantially disassemble the dryer. A quick way to check for internal clogs is to remove the lint filter and use a flashlight to inspect the inside of the duct. If it looks clogged and you can't clear it using your vacuum, contact a qualified appliance repair technician.

Cycling thermostat Although this isn't a common problem, one of the thermostats that controls the temperature in your dryer may break and cause the dryer to heat poorly. If so, you need to replace it. The thermostat is usually a small, round, black device mounted to an oblong steel plate. The plate is mounted to the internal ductwork with two screws.

Can you tell if the dryer is moving air? Is it getting Hot?
if yes, then it sounds like a belt issue. If it is moving air, then the motor is running. If no air, then the motor is NOT running. If this is the case, I would not leave it "Humming" for long. Motor could get pretty hot. Also, there is often a one time over temp switch in the motor. If this gets too hot, this will trigger, killing the motor.
If it seems like a belt issue, look online for instructions for opening the machine up, and check the belt status. Belt could have jumped off a pulley, and just needs to be put back on. Or, something could have failed. You will have to look inside to find out more.

I replaced the thermal fuse because there was no heat. Now the dryer over heats and shuts off. Everything checks ok on ohm meter. The timer works in the "no heat" mode. Could it be the timer...

after you changed the thermal fuse did you clean out the dryer and the vent line?if not you blew the fuse again and it will keep doing this until you clean out the duct that the lint filter slides into, vac and blow out the motor and the cabinet where the motor is and blow out the vent line,if it's a long run remove the vent line from the back of the dryer and blow it out with a leaf blower.the dryer went over 300 degrees from lint buildup and popped the thermal fuse,it's a safety so the dryer doesn't run hot and start a fire.if the dryer is running and sfter like 20 minutes it shuts down and won't start for a while until it cools down then the motor is bad also probably from the dryer running to hot from the lint build up.

Sounds as if the motor centrifugal switch is stuck. Check to see if lint built up around switch or centrifugal mechanism on motor shaft. Rap switch with the handle of a screw driver hard but don't break it .

The heating circuit is working perfectly except for the solenoid coils as indicated by the occasional glowing of the igniter but no gas is ignited. A gas valve closes as the solenoid coil weakens as it gets hot and does not open until it has cooled down. Replace both gas valve solenoid coils to get the dryer back into proper operation. The solenoid coils are part numbers 694539 and 694540 but also can be purchased as a kit here.

Cold dryer

if the dryer runs normal for the first 15 to 30 minutes you have bad gas coils located on the top of the gas valve, take out the 2 phillips screws, remove the top cover and change out the gas coils.when the coils are failing they will work until they heat up then they stop letting the gas come into the dryer, when they cool down then they will work again.change out the gas coils part number 279834

I have had my dryer(Frigidaire Gallery GLER 341 AS2) for about 5 years and it has been working fine up until about a week ago when I noticed a smell of a burned wire. Today it has stopped working all...

Howdy: Sometimes when the main motor goes it will get real hot then stop. When a motor starts to go it wants more current (amps). It gets hot then shuts down. The terminal is where it gets it's current. Check for burnt wires at motor and aroung that area. Good luck -Doug

Thermal fuse blew again.

One thing to check would be the blower. I'm not familiar with your model dryer, so I can't tell you how to get access to it. But if the blower is loose on its motor shaft, it won't move enough air and this can lead to tripping the high limit or thermal fuse failure. You may find a mounting clamp has come off, or the blower wheel may need to be replaced.
