What type of laptop is it and do you have the Windows Re-installation discs?? Or any Windows Installation disc?

Again, what type of laptop it is makes a big difference. HP, Compaq, Dell, Etc...

You are probably going to have to perform a "repair installation", now if there are no files that you really want to keep on the HDD then I would perform a format and complete re-install.

Give me some more info. about your laptop, please....

    Thanks,

    PAINguin

If you didnt backup your files and you need to reinstall your operating system (or run a system recovery), you have a hard choice to make...delete the files while recovering, or try to treat the infection and save your data. A good technician can save your files and fix the machine. Do you have a hard drive enclosure and a second computer to connect it to? If you do, then theres hope. Otherwise, make that painful choice.

The Windows operating system allows you to compress the files on your drive to conserve disk space. In some situations, this compression process will compress files required for the operating system to boot. Files that are compressed must be decompressed prior to execution. Since the operating system has not loaded, boot files cannot yet be decompressed. In this case, the operating system will fail to load and a "BootMgr is compressed" message will appear. An easy way around this problem is to boot from the Windows DVD, and use the provided interface to access your drive properties and decompress it.

Turn on the computer, and insert your Windows DVD. Press a random key on your keyboard once you see the "Press any key..." message. This interrupts booting from the hard drive and forces a boot from the Windows DVD. Click the "Next" button at the bottom of the Windows 7 dialog, and then click the "Repair your Computer" link Below. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa364219(v=vs.85).aspx File Compression and Decompression Select the "Load Drivers" button at the bottom of the "System Recovery Options" dialog, and click the "OK" button on the "Add Drivers" dialog. This opens a file browser on your screen. Click the "Computer" icon, which is located on the left hand side of the screen. This displays an icon for your disk drive. Right-click your hard drive, and click "Properties. " This opens a Local Disk Properties dialog. Click to deselect the "Compress this drive..." option at the bottom, and then click the "Apply" button. Select the "X" icon to close the file browser window. This takes you back to the Install Windows dialog. Press the "X" icon at the corner of the Install Windows dialog. This opens a cancellation dialog. Select the "Yes" button on this dialog to restart your computer. Hope this helps

How will I recover and retrieve my lost pictures and files on my sony vaio?

Advise you to go back and ask exactly what the tech did to fix the problem. It may be that the pics and files are not recoverable. In the future I highly recommend either having two hard drives in your computer - one for your operating system and one for your files or partitioning your single hard drive into two logical ones to keep you operating system and files separate.

Then, most importantly, back your files (evn if it's jsut your most important ones) up regularly even if it's just copying them onto a thumb drive (aka usb drive), writing them to a CD, syncing them to a google drive or even just emailing them to yourself.

No need to back up the operating system files as I've yet to see anyone reinstall a an operating system from a backup.

Can't get passed this screen. It keeps going back to this, then shutting down then back to this - on a loop

Dear Joanne, it means that your update is not either downloaded correctly or there might be some problem with your windows.

1. Restart your computer mate and before the windows screen appears start pressing F8 key.
2. It shall show you a list of different options in which you can boot to windows o/s.
3. First choose LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION option from the list and then press enter. Give a try there. If everything works fine, its good. You shall have to update again.
4. If it doesn't solve the problem then repeat the above mentioned step and this time go for Safe Mode. Once logging in the Safe Mode, Restore your computer to an earlier restore point and it shall definitely solve your problem.

In both cases you shall have to update your computer again.

If you can boot into safe mode try, system restore. You can even load window on top of it's self (repairing).
Anything XP or newer does not require a system.ini file. Only Win 98 or older. Here is what I found. http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000211.htm

Try using a better extracting tool like Winrar or 7zip. They have better options on handling zip files. Just download and install the program suited for your operating system.

You computer is infected by the spyware virus try to run in the safemode and download and install spyware doctor of pctools also the registry mechanic this two utilities is very helpful in term of spyware virus. But sometime if your computer infected by the UST.AVI virus you cannot install any program even the anti virus. The virus automatically close any program you install to prevent the anti virus to install in the system. If this happen the only way to salvage the files is reinstall the windows in the other directory then after you finished install windows. You can copy now the the files in the old directory copy of the windows your needed files. and delete the old windows directory permanently.
