I've plugged in my Maxtor external memory unit into my laptop but
When I've copied a file and go to choose the maxtor as the destination it does not show up as a choice.
I looked in the " my computer " screen and it is not there.
I tried troubleshooting and it says it is working fine.

Go to Device Manager To get to Device Manager you will: Right click on My Computer>Properties>click the Hardware Tab>Device Manager. After you are in Device Manager look for your MP3 player or hard drive unit. Here you should see no "Yellow" exclamation points. If you do they they are telling you that you have a device conflict. If you currnetly have your unit plugged in, you may notice the "unknown device" which would be your Player or hard drive unit. If you unit has an exclamation point by it, then you will need to click on it and delete it. After you remove all devices with conflicts then click on refresh and search again for your MP3 player/ or hard drive unit. The computer should install your hard drive device this time and solve your problem with connection of the MP3 player/Device. Please take time to rate me thumbs up.
Open "My Computer".
Click with the SECOND (usually the RIGHT) mouse-button on the CD-ROM icon.
Select the file on the CD.
Click with the SECOND mouse-button on the desired file.
Choose a "destination" for the "copy" operation.
Your best bet would be to get an external drive because they are more reliable than photo cards. another option would be a USB Flash Drive or (Pen Drive) which you do not typically need to install. All you have to do is plug it in to one of your open USB ports and you will see it show up unde (My Computer).
If you have large amounts of data I would recommend getting an External hard Drive Seagate make several models and so does Maxtor
I'm not overly familiar with Vista yet, but I believe that you will have to delete these as administrator. Use the Vista help menu, you'll find it there. If it's a program file you will need to uninstall, versus delete, from the add/remove programs in the control panel.
