Trained technician can clean the video heads individually and manually but I do not recomend it for general public. Best you can do is to purchase a good head cleaning tape. First, dust off the tape loading area with can air, then run the head cleaning tape for 10 seconds (our general recomendation is 5 seconds) but NO MORE. hope this works. -James. I have tapes with videos on them. I want to put them on the computer but I never did in about a year. I finally got around to doing it. I know there is video on the tapes but when I play them they don't...

When you get a blue screen, it is usually an indication of dirty heads. You should try and run a head cleaning tape for about 5 to 10 seconds. Then, try your tape again. If it shows signs of improvement, but still is not all better, run the head cleaner for another 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat as necessary (only running head cleaning tape for 5 to 10 second intervals). The cleaner tapes that we use in our shop are Sony brand....they last a really long time and seem to work the best.

Hope this has helped you.

Camera will not play tapes

If you are getting a blue screen while trying to play back a tape that you know has a recording on it then its gonna be 1 of 2 things, No.1 your video heads have gotten dirty and you need to get a cleaning tape to run through the tape path to clean the unit, or No2 if your cleaning it doesnt help then you are going to need to have the video heads replaced. Usually once the heads are replaced they check the alignments for you as well and do a proper cleaning. I hope this helps

I have a Canon ZR90A and started noticing horizontal gray lines displaying across the screen when it plays back. What is causing this?

The most common cause of horizontal lines during playback is dirty heads/tape path. If you have a head cleaner tape, try playing it for about 5 to 10 seconds and then try your tape again. Repeat as necessary. Try not to run the head cleaner for long periods of time because you may wear down your heads quicker (cleaning cassette is somewhat abrasive). If you do not own a head cleaning tape, I highly recommend purchasing one. Sony (in my opinion) makes the best miniDV head cleaning cassette. We use this brand in our repair shop and they last for years. I have posted a link to the particular tape I am speaking of. Your local camera/camcorder shop may have these for sale.

Cannon xl1 tracking problem....record and play back all choppy...have cleaned head 4 times

How did you clean it? With a cleaning tape or how? If so, it's not good, it should be professionally cleaned. If you tried that then maybe the head has to be changed. If so, you will have to contact Canon and see how much they ask for head replacement and adjustment.

Hope this helps!

Canon XL1. Unable to playback tape in camcorder

I have the solution that the canon expert forgot to mention. And this solved my exact problem too. I put in the tape and then shut the white door over top. This doesn't engage the tape. Problem solved. Human error, The fix cost nothing.

Dirty heads

I work for canon and when I get one this dirty I use a tape that has been recorded with used or almost used up. I let the tape rewind and fast forward all the way through. I then use a soft head cleaning tape for 25 secs. If that doesn't work then it might need an adjustment.

I had the exact same problem; my tape icon was flashing red with a line through it and the recorder would not record, no matter how hard I begged it to. After a full day of frustration, I called the videographer who had used it previously. There is a little trick.

1. Open the exterior tape door with the "Eject" button.
2. Wait, dont touch the tape. The little metal encasement will pop over and open within a few seconds.
3. To properly put the tape in, insert tape, push the little metal door that sais "Push this first".
4. Then push the exterior door closed.

Voila! Thats all there is to it!
