Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

Can't install WINDOWS.

I just bought a brand new WD Sata Hard drive for my Dell Dimension 8400. I tried installing Windows XP Pro, then I attempted to install Windows XP Home. I got my new hard drive formatted but I can't get either operating system to install. Is there something I'm missing. I have boot CD's for both OS's but I am stuck right now. I can't do most of the options when I'm given them.

WindowsXP does not natively support SATA drives. The install disc doesn't contain any SATA drivers for these devices. You can retrieve the correct driver HERE, and slipstream the driver into your windows disc. For slipstreaming tutorials and software, go HERE.

This might be caused by hard-drive failure. You should run hard drive test from BIOS to make sure hard drive is ok. You can access BIOS by pressing F2 during start up, from there start hard disk self test and wait for it to complete.

If hard drive is ok after test, insert in your original Windows installation media and reinstall OS.

2. Is the hard drive compatible with the new Operating system (VISTA).
3. Check to see if you have the hard drive properly inserted that is properly cabled and connected. This will render error in installation.
4. Make sure you are installing the Operating system correctly.

check the power cable and ide/sata cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard maybe they are just disconnected, if the unit is working properly before you cleaned it, or does the unit detect the hard drive and cd/dvd drive during power on self test, if yes then you do need to re install windows, if you do not have an xp cd then you just have to purchased a genuine copy if you want to troubleshoot it by your self, or just take to it to comp. tech save trouble and lost of your time

Is i giving any errors when you try to install? You may need to download the Sata controller Drivers from Dell and when prompted choose the F6 option and install them then.

Hope this helps,

What type of hard drive is it. Sound like you put in a SATA hard drive. You need to load the drivers for that hard drive. During the Windows XP setup it gives you an option to load 3rd party drivers that what is sounds like you need to to.

Download the six winxp install floppies,,from bootdisk.com and install that way.
Your PC was not meant for XP it was meant for Millenium at most.
But if you load through floppies and then use the cd you should be OK

It is not a controller problem. When you install XP with a SATA drive, You get to a point on the install where you are asked if you have 3rd party divers to install. You have to hit F6 and point it to where the SATA drivers are. You need the SATA divers for you unit. Dell may have them on their website.
Without the SATA drivers, Xp will not see the serial drive.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
