It is a little hard to vapor lock a small Briggs & Stratton single piston engine. To get the carburator that hot the muffler on the tiller may be plugged up, causing the carburator to get too hot. There is a two piece muffler with a screen inside that gets plugged up when you run the tiller on some models. I finally got fed up and got a replacement muffler of a different design to solve the plugging problem. There is also a couple of tubes in the fuel tank with small screens that get plugged up also causing fuel starving to the engine. Also check and make sure the fuel tank cap vent is not plugged up. Having trouble with vapor locking


Vapor lock can be caused by many different things, all coming down to the same root cause: too much heat in the fuel feed lines.

Low fuel pressure can cause the amount of heat needed to vapor lock to be lower than normal, so checking fuel pressure is important. Fuel pump going out feels a lot like vapor lock.

Engine overheat can also cause vapor lock. Clogged fuel filter can cause vapor lock. The fuel line should be routed away from the exhaust system.

fuel injected car do not get vapor lock,check you fuel pressure,if it is OK (with in spec) pull the vacuum line from fuel pressure regulator if it is wet (gas in it) then you need a regulator as the diaphragm is ruptured ,also bad T.P.S (thrittle position sensor) can cause the same sympton

IF it was vapor locked it would still turn over just not start. If it was vapor locked you can just loosen the gas cap and it would immediately start. If it is vapor locked you will hear a hissing suction sound while loosing gas cap. Its trying to get air.Quick fix leave gas cap off..Drill a small hole in the center of gas cap. It will let it breath. To fix it right.Buy the filtering charcoal canister. Never put that extra 25 cents in at gas station once gas nozzle clicks. That extra gas goes down the vapor filtering line causing it to clogg up over years.

Its possible if you have a carb instead of fuel injection.
The engine would stall and have to sit for a while to cool off before restarting. The carb would in effect run out of gas.

How do you fix vapor lock on a 1996 buick road master


Pull the spark plugs and turn the motor over a few times. On these cars they do not "vapor lock", instead you will need to replace the intake gaskets as they tend to mushroom and cause the vehicle to hydro-lock (usually in the #3-#5 cylinders). Also look forward to drilling out the #12 intake bolt as that is usually rusted into the block. Good luck

sounds like the reason it starts and idles fine at start up is your choke is functioning... as your vehicle warms up.. the choke starts to kick off... Inspect your throttle body and idle control motor.
