I'm in Texas. I have a cousin in NC who has a Dell Dimension 4400 running on Windows 2000 Pro. I'm trying to help this lady long distance and she says she doesn't have sound. What specific info do I need to get from her to solve this. She said she had some speakers but there isn't a place on her computer to "plug them in." I doubt that! She's just not at all literate when it comes to computers. She's 72 and just wants to email.

If she just wants to email, then she doesn't need sound :c) LOL

Okay, first get a picture of the back of the 4400...

Show her where it should plug into. Since this computer has an actual sound card and not onboard sound, it is possible her sound card is missing. If that is the case, then direct her to the purchase of an inexpensive sound card that she can just plug into the computer and go.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

Well walk her through verifying that the audio card in the PC has no conflicts (Device Manager), and then she's going to have to look for an output on either the motherboard or near the expansion slots (where a PCI or PCIe x1reside) and look for the GREEN (universal analog audio output port) output. But mainly check for recognition of the audio card in the Device Manager, and take it from there....

No boot device available

Make sure all the connections to the Hard Drive are tight and secure. Then see if it will boot. If not then try loading a windows cd and see if it detects the Hard drive. If it does not the hard drive is no good if it does try running the automated system recovery you may have a corrupt MBR file.
