Question about Gateway M305CRV Notebook

Memory problem I have a Compaq Presario R4000. I purchased it a few years ago with only 256k memory on the mother board. I figured I could add more later. I then purchased a second 256k module. I installed it and all was fine. I have now decided I need alot more. I purchased a 1GB PC2700 DDR333 from Memory Ten. I installed the module in place of the removable 256k I had The laptop just sits with a blank screen. Compaq says this is the right memory and has no idea why it doesn't work. They had me upgrade the bios but no luck. When I put the 256k back in all is fine again. The info can find is I can add up to 2GB in any combination. Does the largest memory module need to be installed in the slot that is not accessable to me???? THANKS

The memory upgrade FAQ for your PC is located HERE. It says that the maximum amount of memory is 1GB, and from the components list HERE, the largest it can handle with one stick would be 512 of PC2100 memory.

You may have purchased a memory stick that requires more speed than your memory block can give. the speed for this lap top should be around 455-500 MHz on the memory block. if the memory stick requires more than that, its not going to work.

Yes, go to Start>Control panel>Power Options. There also should be a screen brightness key on your key board, that looks like a sun shining, with arrows pointing up & down. To use that key, hit the FN key, right next to the Ctrl key. Push & hold the FN key, while pushing the up arrow. That should increase the brightness of your display. Good luck.

It's unlikely that you have 2 or more defective memory modules. Remove all cards such as video, modem, etc. Also disconnect all drives (hard drive, CD, DVD). Try booting with one memory module at a time. If still a no go then I would suspect the motherboard.

Need to know the number of beeps. They're called beep codes. This page lists some of the Compaq beep codes and what they mean.

It seems that your notebook does not have sata connection to Hard drive. Your harddrive is IDE connection. Sorry but you can't use SATA on this laptop.

I have a compaq presario r4000 will not boot up correctly

When you start it up, go to the BIOS option and select "peripheral" settings. I don't know which column its under but you want to turn the network adapter off. If that makes your Operating System come up working (And you may have to come up in SAFE mode the first time), then you can always go back and reset the BIOS to recognize the network adapter, or install a different one.

Screen won't display

It's quite possible that the mother board (your main circuit board) and/or display adapter was damaged. Your only recourse now, most likely, is to contact HP. Good luck!
