Spooler Sub System App stopped working and was closed All 3 of my printers are inoperable!! How do I reopen Spooler System?

I am running Vista Home Premium on Dell DIMENSION E520.

I have already been in touch with Microsoft, who suggest re-installing printers - BUT installation will not proceed because Spooler closed. Also received advice from Dell to use "service.msc" and re-set 'Print Spooler'. Appears to work but no difference in printer display on 'control' - blank screen. Occasionally have seen the printer list, showing HP1020 Laser on line, but when calling for a print in Word (Office 2007) nothing happens!!

Just this evening, technician from Dell (Phillipines) has spent one hour operating my machine remotely without resolving the problem. The Spooler just does not actually re-set to open, although it says it is open.

Thanks for your interest - this really is a tricky one!

Hi,

Have you looked at this Microsoft KB article;

support.microsoft.com/kb/324757

There are few registry edits which if you follow the KB's mentioned should fix your problem.

I hope this helps;

Thanks.

Start Regedit, go to Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Printers, and create a
new key named 'Connections' (right-click when 'Printers' is open and
choose 'new key'. That will solve it. It's only an annoyance, and
doesn't appear to affect anything. I have an HP printer and had the same
issue.

How to force delete print jobs Fortunately, there is a way to delete the hung print job without having to save all your work, close all your applications, and restart your computer. Here's how (note that this is intended for Windows XP systems, but a similar approach works on other systems - if this doesn't work for you reply below with your Operating System and version):
  • Browse to Start -> Run... and type in "NET STOP SPOOLER" (this will stop the print spooler service)
  • Browse to your windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ folder
  • You should see files there ending in .SPL and .SHD created around the time you tried to print - delete these files.
  • Browse to Start -> Run... and type in "NET START SPOOLER" (this will restart the print spooler service)
  • Double click the printer icon in the lower-right corner of your taskbar to examine your print job queue and browse to View -> Refresh.
Voila :) You should see that annoying hung print job finally disappear completely and you should now be able to resume printing without having to restart your computer.

How to fix 'print spooler'

  1. open regedit (e.g. click Start, key regedit and press Enter)
  2. navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers
under this key, there will be the keys Version-2 and Version-3 (one or the other of these may be absent - not a problem)
the sub-keys under these contain the printer driver configuration information
delete all the sub-keys inside Version-2 and Version-3, but not these keys themselves
The Microsoft Knowledgebase article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312052 lists some other registry entries to delete, but this is not usually necessary.
  1. open a Command Prompt window
  2. key the commands
    net stop spooler
    net start spooler

  3. open Windows Explorer
  4. navigate to %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers\ and delete any files there. By default, this is where the print spooler stores print files.
  5. navigate to %systemroot%\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 (%systemroot% is usually Windows, but it might be winnt or something else; this is set when the OS is installed).
  6. inside w32x86, there will be folders with the names 2 and 3 (one or more of these may be absent - not a problem)
delete all of the files and sub-folders in each of the 2 and 3 folders, but not the folders themselves
inside w32x86, there may be other folders with names starting with "hewlett_packard", "hphp" or something else; delete these folders also
  7. restart the print spooler (see steps 8 and 9 above)

Spooler sub system app??

The issue occurs because of a corrupted printer driver installed and because of the Vista OS that keeps updating.

-Open up c:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS

-Delete the contents of the directory (not the directory).

-Restart the print spool service. (service.msc)

HP print spooler problem and error 1068. Want my printer back!!!

There are several ways to resolve printer spooler error, probably because there are many variations of this error. The error caused by faulty software can be resolved by deleting all the information found in the directory. Thereafter, navigate to the Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools and then services icon. Find the service labeled Print Spooler, highlight it and restart the process. If that doesn’t work, the program might be corrupted. Click on start, then Run. Search for the document labeled services.msc, and this will trigger the opening of another window. On this window, scroll down and click “Print Spooler”. Check its setting and turn on automatic mode. Click Okay, and restart the machine. If you’re lucky, this might be all you have to do. Still doesn’t work? Navigate to the Add/Remove Programs screen of the Control Panel. Find the all the software responsible for making the printer run including the drivers, and uninstall them. Be sure to be thorough about it, or the problem may not be solved. Download the latest copy of your printer’s software from the manufacturer and reinstall it. get more information for printer spooler error .Hope this helps you.
