Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have an older mongram refridgerator (42 inch). It takes 134a, and has two shrader (sp) valves. I assume that the one that goes into the compressor is the low press side. It shows min press (less than 5psi) when compressor is running. Do I charge to a certain press or to a temp or both. And with a empty system how much freon does the system use by weight?

Thanks for the answer. I bought the refridgerator used, no manuals. I have looked top, bottom ,inside, outside, front, back. Where is the model plate found? The compressor has a plate that says 11.8 lra??

You will proably need a diagnostic done by a professional because it takes special tools to test for refridgerant. A couple things you can look at . First with car off see if you can move center part of compressor if it spins good if not, compressor may be problem. Then remove low side shrader valve cover and depress valve quickly, does any gas come out,if so good now start car, turn on a/c does center of compressor spin or is it stopped. If not spinning may be low enough on charge that low pressure cut-out has engaged. If it spinning you may have a plugged expansion valve take it to apro

Are you sure that it takes 134a? That is the refrigerant that is in cans. Without knowing what the pressures are on the high and low side and the ambient air temp, it is hard to say what the issue is. I would check the compressor cut off and that is controlled by the thermostat. If it is not shuttting off the compressor, then the temp of the evaporator coil gets too cold.

Probably not. If you did the compressor would likely pump it back up again. There may be a shrader valve on the pump that you could use to drop the line pressure, and then unplug the compressor.
My guess would be a faulty height sensor.

Can i recharge compressor labeled R600a with R134a

If your seriously going to do a conversion I would atleast change the compressor to one that is designed for R-134A. The density in the two refridgerants are different and I just don't see a positive outcome by leaving the old compressor in.

When recharging the ac you need to recover the old refridgerent. That means you have to take out all the old 134 and replace with new 134. On the engine sticker under the hood should tell you how many pounds of 134 it takes. When put in the 134 make sure your ac is on high.

Fridge freezing

Low freon charge will cause the compressor to run continuously, as it never reaches the set temperature. This will also cause excessive ice buildup as well. I am assuming this little fridge doesn't have an automatic defrost. If it does look at that next. You didn't say, but does it reach proper temperature? Go to the back where the compressor is. Feel the lines coming out of the compressor. the low pressure, or larger one, it may have insulation around it, should be cold. If you cant tell (sometimes these small compressors they look the same size) its the line leading inside the freezer. Feel about 1 foot away from the compressor, if possible. Next feel the high or small pipe, this one is going to the outside coil. This should be very warm, but not cool and not real hot. This goes for the compressor too. A 134A system sometimes is very hot when low on freon.
