Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have an older mongram refridgerator (42 inch). It takes 134a, and has two shrader (sp) valves. I assume that the one that goes into the compressor is the low press side. It shows min press (less than 5psi) when compressor is running. Do I charge to a certain press or to a temp or both. And with a empty system how much freon does the system use by weight?

Thanks for the answer. I bought the refridgerator used, no manuals. I have looked top, bottom ,inside, outside, front, back. Where is the model plate found? The compressor has a plate that says 11.8 lra??

Motor runs not chilling. Contacted Avanti, they said I need to use a local service person but none are available.

You said the compressor is running? Right? Check for the temperature of the suction line to compressor (line going to compressor from the evaporator coil) - it should be cold. The other line going to evaporator should be nice and hot.

If suction line is not cold, then the unit may have a gas leak and needs to be regassed. However, you need to first locate the leak, repair it, evacuate the system to make sure the fix is good and then refill with appropriate refrigerant. U will need to get a shrader valve to tap into the suction line, a leak detector, leak repair tools, vacuum pump, and refrigerant with manifold.

Can i recharge compressor labeled R600a with R134a

If your seriously going to do a conversion I would atleast change the compressor to one that is designed for R-134A. The density in the two refridgerants are different and I just don't see a positive outcome by leaving the old compressor in.

Our Amana Refridgerator's (this model), stopped cooling this weekend. Had a repair guy come by and he told us the compressor is shot and somthing about the factory seal for the freon had apparently given...

No you have to be cfc certified to replace the compressor. The freon used is either R-12 or R-134a common automotive grade 134a freon will not work properly in a refrigerator. You also need to replace the filter dryer sometimes it requires special solder. You will also need torches oxygen cetylene mix or map gas. Then you will need to check for leaks, pull a vacuum on the system making sure you get all the air out of the system because if their is to much air in lines unit will not cool. Then you will need special gauges to measure the amount of freon that goes inside the refrigerator. If something happens and you dont know how to properly read the gauges something could happen that would be even a greater out of pocket exspence to repair the refrigerator. Their is also the risk of damaging the wires or plastic water lines. My advice is to call around to some other companies to check on getting price of compressor replaced and installed. That will let you know if it is practical versus buying a new fridge or trying to purchase a used unit. Not a practical do it yourself project usually takes 1-3 hours to replace and get back going.

I have a whirlpool refridgerator with ice maker, freezer floods.

in the freezer section there is drain hole and you can see it if you take the back wall of the freezer (the inside wall) and you might just need to clean it all the way to the compressor drain pan.

What does compressor getting noisy on ocaisson mean? Do I need to assume failure is immenient or could it last a while longer?

It is hard to say how long any appliance will last, but I would not replace solely for a noisy compressor. Most all compressors with age will get noisy on start up and shut down. If there is an espically loud knock on shut of check the mount bushings or for broken/lose mounting hardware

How to you put freon 134A into a GE side by side?

You will have to install a valce to hook up the hose from the can.

A piercing valve is what is typically used.

I attatches to the low pressure line, and pierces the line at the same time sealing itself to the line. You can then hook the hose to the valve and charge the system.

**Note, any refridgerant other than 134A requires a CFC certification to buy or use.

Fridge freezing

Low freon charge will cause the compressor to run continuously, as it never reaches the set temperature. This will also cause excessive ice buildup as well. I am assuming this little fridge doesn't have an automatic defrost. If it does look at that next. You didn't say, but does it reach proper temperature? Go to the back where the compressor is. Feel the lines coming out of the compressor. the low pressure, or larger one, it may have insulation around it, should be cold. If you cant tell (sometimes these small compressors they look the same size) its the line leading inside the freezer. Feel about 1 foot away from the compressor, if possible. Next feel the high or small pipe, this one is going to the outside coil. This should be very warm, but not cool and not real hot. This goes for the compressor too. A 134A system sometimes is very hot when low on freon.
