Loud noise on agitation and spin

I've got a 6-year old Maytag Atlantis MAV9600 top load washer. It works well, but makes a loud continuous noise during agitation and spin. It's not high pitched (like a belt on a car, for instance, that's going), but rather a medium pitch. Any suggestions on what I should be looking at? Like I said, except for the noise during spin and agitation, machine is working very well. Thanks!

I checked to see if anything is stuck, but that's not the case. The washer is making noise - sort of a grinding, medium pitch sound - during agitation and spin. I don't think it is the spin bearing because the sound continues even in spin mode when I stop the tub from spinning. I took off the front of the machine, and can't tell whether the sound is coming from the transmission/seal assembly or water pump. When I raise the lid (stopping the cycle) I hear a "whooosh" as the agitation or spin stops. Otherwise, machine is working fine - no problems with washing, just very noisy.

Any additional help in trying to diagnose the problem would be very appreciated!

That noise would be the bearings that are used between the tub and motor.

Could be transmission, you can see if any oil has been slung by taking front panel off.also listen to see if pump is making the noise.

Hi,I may be able to give you somethings to check.Either the belt is worn and making the noise (even though you already stated it didnt sound like a belt). The lower bearing on the tub is worn.If you can tip it and expose the bottom of the washer you may be able to tell the difference. If you see alot of black, small specs and the belt has a shiny glaze on it i would say the belt,if not the bearing--let me know.

Hi, try running it w/o any load in it. If it still makes the noise, then the problem might be with the bearing on which the tub rotates. You can try lubricating it. If it doesnt work, you may have to replace the bearing.
Good Luck :)

This washer would fill and agitate, but started making noise during the agitation portion of the cycle. Once the cabinet was removed, I started inspecting the mechanical portion of the washer and the noise seemed to be emanating from the pump, but when I removed the pump from the motor, the noise continued. I removed the motor to get access to the gearbox and found that when I turned the shaft counter-clockwise, the agitator would function with a distinct clicking noise present. Turning the shaft in the clockwise direction was impossible since the unit was locked up and would not turn with any force. The direct-drive gearbox is a bi-directional transmission that will provide agitation movement to the center shaft when turned one way, and rotational spinning to the clutch when the input to the shaft is reversed. The fortunate thing for diagnosing mechanical problems in these washers is if you can eliminate the other components as good, replacing the gear case as a unit will usually be fix to get the machine up and running again quickly.

Possible that something is caught in oyour pump assembly, possible that perhaps event he pump itself has a bad bearing, in wehich case youd need to replace th pump.. one way to tell is if you tilt the machine back you can hear where the noise seems to be originating, yo can also removeth belt( it simply strecthes over ht pulleys, and physically look for damage to the pump, might be quite evident

Washer makes loud grinding noise during agitation and does not agitate - it is a maytag atlantis.... fix or replace?

I suspect the thrust bearing kit is bad. This comes with great instructions and is easily replaced. I would recommend changing this before replacing the machine. You are not out much if it does not work, but I am confident you will get it going by replacing this! This is a VERY common problem with these washers and the new kit has been redesigned.
