Is the machine operating properly, or are your clothes getting a musty smell?
The musty smell has a few solutions, One may work but probably a combination of all will work best.
Immediately move wet clothes to the dryer, do not let them sit in the washer for a long time. If your clothes smell, put mouthwash with your clothes directly in the tub during the wash cycle (this will not stain your clothes) leave the door open when not in use (lets it dry out) If the washer smells, use bleach and hot water in an empty cycle once in a while (kills just about every kind of bacteria or mold which may be causing the smell) Use washing machine cleaner once in a while(can be found at your local grocery store isle next to detergent) Dry your clothes completely, damp clothes can start to smell again.
If you are looking for a new washer, try to find a newer model that features a stainless steel tub with silver impregnation. The silver is a natural disinfectant.
To remove gas (petrol) smell from clothing, soak overnight in baby
oil (use like you would downy), then wash in baking soda, then wash with
normal detergent. It will rid "gas smell" from an entire basket of
clothes. Air Dry ONLY
From ehow website:
Buy a bottle of baby oil. Since gas is an oil based product it is going
to take an oil based product to clean the gas out of your clothing. Baby
oil is a great product to use as it shouldn't, in most cases, cause
further damage to your clothing.
Soak your clothes with a bit of laundry detergent, water, and a generous
portion of baby oil. Also dab some right on the stain before soaking.
Swash your clothes in the water for a while and let them sit for about
five minutes. Transfer the clothes into your washer, once again
remembering not to mix them with any other clothing, and let the cycle
Wash the clothes. If you have a top load washer, let it partially fill
up about 1/4 of the way with water. Put some of the baby oil in the wash
with the clothes and swash it around a bit. Once the washer cycle
begins, add the detergent and let the cycle finish. Make sure that your
gas coated clothes are the only clothes you put in the wash.
Dry your clothing. Make sure you only AIR DRY on a clothes line these
clothes. It could take more than one wash to get all the oil out of your
clothing. If you use the dryer after the first, or even the second
time, you could risk starting a fire in your dryer.
Check and see if any smell remains in your clothing. If the smell of gas
remains on the clothing repeat the wash with baby oil again until the
smell is gone.

Hope your filter is clean. Don’t wait for the
machine to jam to
look into your filter.
You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits of soap and
things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this
works great on all front loaders. Use very hot water with the Affresh
with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle. Also helps with any
stagnant water smells. Put the Affresh
pellet inside the machine, not in the soap dispenser.

WASHER MAGIC is the revolutionary product specifically formulated to safely and effectively clean the family washing machine. Top loading machine use whole bottle. Front loading use 1/2 bottle. You may rub Washer Magic on with a rag to eliminate odors.
Why Use WASHER MAGIC? Every time you wash your clothes, hard water and detergents causes lime scale and rust to build up inside the tub, pump and hoses. This build-up reduces the ability of your washing machine to perform. Mineral build-up acts as an abrasive increasing the wear on your clothes. The result: your clothes are not as clean as they could be and wear out sooner.
If you are unhappy with the way your clothes comes out of the wash, then WASHER MAGIC may be the solution you have been looking for. Only WASHER MAGIC can restore the family washing machine to the way it performed when it was new. Use once a month for optimal washer performance and to keep control of trouble causing build-up.
