Replacing the motherboard at this point is like shooting a canon to kill a mosquito. Laptops come with a emergency shutdown procedure when they get overheated so that nothing is damaged. So if it shut off then it was doing what it is suppose to do.

Just for clarification are you able to get it to power up at all right now? Try it with just the battery, then try it taking the battery out and just the adapter. Let me know and we can continue from there....

No No don't pay them $450, first of all there is no power supply inside a laptop like a desktop. The only power supply is the battery. So there is nothing Dell can do except charge you $600 to replace your motherboard which you will lose all your data anyway..lots of things could have happend with overheating, it does sound like the motherboard may have shorted out..and yes in this type of situation is where laptops are inferior to desktops they cannot be fixed for cheap. I run a small pc repair shop, if you do decide to get rid of it I'll be glad to give you $100 for it and you pay the shipping...I use desktops and laptops that no longer work for training on how to take them apart and what parts they have...so let me know...my email is mattie289404@gmail.com. Good luck whatever you choose. Oh, if you do get another Dell, take a hard look at the Vostro line of computers. I only buy Dell and I got a Vostro 1310, it is solid as a rock and works smooth. They are also reasonalbly priced for upperclass laptops..take care let me know.

Why would laptop get hot and shut off

Because the fan is so dirty it can't cool the computer or you are using it in your bed without a powered fan assist tray. Buy a powered fan assist try and forget about it.

Gateway md2614u shut down

I would remove the heatsink and fan, clean the processor surfaces with methylated spirit or isopropanol, use new heatsink compound and that should fix your issue. Yes yes, heatsink pipe should get hot!

Laptop shut down

Sounds like it is getting too hot. Does it feel real hot when it shuts down? Is the fan and power supply working well and unobstructed so they get good air circulation?

Sounds like a severe hardware problem concerning your laptop's hard drive. I suggest you contact Gateway customer service to check on your warranty - your laptop is, simply put, broken. The best approach to repairing it is not to fix it yourself in this case.

I have a gateway MT3707 pc notebook. It randomly freezes (no blue screen) & I have to hold the power button down to shut down & reboot. Is this a driver issue or hardware failure... I'm thinking...

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If none of this solves the problem, or is not the case, then you might have a bad motherboard.

Gateway MX8711 ran hot. Now will not power up

It sounds like the laptop has had some sort of thermal problem. Do you use it in a dusty/dirty environment? Did the laptop blower fan seem louder than it normaly was in the past? Any number of things (including age) could cause a laptop's fan to stop/work ineffectually and cause it to overheat.

Hi, I use the air cool product from www.pwx.cc that allows you to move the laptop constantly to prevent a hotspot on your desk. I think it may work for you.

Gateway 7410 laptop keeps on turning off after complete boot. The cpu fan speeds up and after a few seconds the laptop turns off

Could very well be that it is getting hot. If the cooling system is plugged, there is no air movement, and this would make the fan speed up as the temp rises. Shut the laptop down, unplug from a/c adaptor, remove battery, and try blowing the cooling system out from the outlet to the fan with a can of air. You might want to stick a paperclip or the like in to stop the fan from spinning.

DO NOT USE AN AIR COMPRESSOR AS THAT AIR IS MOIST.

Gateway T-1625 Laptop won't boot up at all

It sounds like a motherboard issue. The fan spinning and the LED lights are running off of battery power. This indicates that power is getting to the system. You should look into replacing the motherboard at this point. Before you replace the motherboard feel your system to see if there are any really hot spots that would indicate overheating. If not proceed with the replacement. If so, let me know where the hot spot is.
