Problems playing unprotected .mp3 files on DSM-320

By man1 - usenet poster

I am having the following problem with my DSM-320 (firmware 1.04):

While running the D-link server software, the box plays all file types
listed under "supported file types" (assuming you use the correct codecs),
but it will not play protected media content. (WMA files downloaded from
MusicMatch)

After shutting down the D-link software and running WMC, the device is
recognized immediately and registers for playing protected content with no
problems. However, WMC only shows (and plays) .WMA files (unprotected and
protected). Unprotected .mp3 files are not visible on the DSM-320.

I was told by D-link technical support that WMC only supports .WMA files,
which I do not believe is true. Is this something with file-tagging? Any
ideas?

After more troubleshooting, I have solved the problem. I don't know if this
is helpful to others, but the following is what I did:
(1) Moved all music files into a new shared folder with WMC. I had been
keeping my music under "All Users / My Music" in Windows XP.
(2) Turned off the Indexing Service for each .mp3 file (Under the "Advanced
Properties" tag for each file

After both of these steps, I am now able to play both mp3 and wma files
(protected and unprotected). I had to complete both steps to get it to work.
For some reason, the "My Music" folder had some property set that was not
allowing WMC to share unprotected .mp3 files. (I played with the properties
but could never determine what the problem was.) Turns out it was a bad idea
to keep music in the "My Music" folder. Go figure.

Thanks for the reply. I tried re-installing WMP v10 and updating the music
library. WMP sees all of my music files, but the DSM-320 still only displays
.WMA files using the Media Connect server. The D-Link server plays all
unprotected content, but I was hoping to be able to play music I have ripped
from CDs plus purchased .WMA files on the same player without having to
switch servers. Very frustrating...

Has anyone else had this problem?

D-Link technical support must be doing early holiday drinking. It supports
protected and unprotect WMA and Mp3. As long as you are using WMC. The only
issue I had with it not seeing files, is getting my playlists straight. I
was using ITUNE's which is must better then WMP, but it does not use the
correct form of playlists for WMC to use. So I pointed Window Music
Player(WMP) to all my music folders and updated the WMP libary. All the
playlists were nicely created and the DSM can see all my music files
regardless of format. The only format it can't see is ACC music format.
It's apples protected music file format for files you buy from its site.
