Hi..my name is Keith..and you didnt give me very much information about what kind of machine.tractor you have..but there will not be any power comming out of your distributer if the points are up on the cam and the points are open..but if the points are on the flat side of the cam..there should be voltage..if the points are on the flat ..and the points have no voltage the the points are either burnt or have arced and pitted and that means that the points and condensor needs replacing..i hope this has helped..if not with me back with further details and i will be glad to help you

I have a john deere 2010. with a generator it is a pos ground when I got it someone put a alternator on it dose this change the ground to a negative

To be sure you can use a test light, touch one lead from the test light to the frame of the tractor and the other lead to the Positive + terminal of the battery if it lights up it is negative ground if not touch the negative - terminal of the battery and if it lights it is positive ground.
One thing to check if it was converted to negative ground is that the switched the wire on the ignition coil.

john-deere-2010-generator-pos-ground-qumruwi2utlvsp5qakcuppif-5-0.jpg Using your test light you need to turn the key to run position, touch one lead to the negative - terminal of the battery and on the ignition coil touch the Bat + threaded stud it should light and means it correct and do nothing. if not touch the Dist - threaded stud and see if it lights if it does move the wires on the ignition coil to where every wire on the Bat + threaded stud is moved to the dist - and every wire on the Dist - threaded stud is moved to the Bat +.
There is a good chance your charge gauge is backwards also , it swings in the direction the current runs and when it was reversed so did the needle on the gauge and in the case it does not mean it is discharging.

Were does the wire for the points on a bolens 1058 cone from

The ignition coil will have two small nuts , one on each side of the spark plug wire. It can be labeled many ways, + - , pos neg , Bat Dist , point will hook to the - ,NEG , Dist . The only time this will be the other way is when you system is a Positive ground, that is the + , positive of the battery hooked to the frame instead of the - Neg.

I AM NOT GETTING FIRE TO THE #8 AND #5 PLUG WIRE ON A 1964 283 SMALL BLOCK THAT HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO ELECTRONIC IGNITION

Are you checking at the Dist Cap or spark plug end of plug wire ?
If you are checking at the plug end of wire try exchanging that wire with a working wire. If the problem is not there with other good wire the wire must be bad. If it is not the plug wires to #8 & #5 replace DIST CAP. The Cap must be cracked or arcing internally.

Turns over not starting changed points

Verify the point gap is set right and that you are getting a good spark. Check to see if you are getting fuel to the carb.

No fire at plugs on golden jubilee ford tractor . I have power to the coil and power out of the coil but can't get any fire.

check and see if the points are gapped, no gap or too wide(not closing) make sure the point set is grounded properly and the connector tab from the points to the terminal is insulated. if you dont find it here then you have a bad condensor. look closely where the terminal comes out of the distributor and make sure the insulator is intact. i have seen people putiing in points loose them and also cracks from the years have led them to rot and when the terminal is turned they just turn to dust. i found one from just 8n's for mine and put it in he has naa parts as well. the trick is the points have to open and close and not be gronded to the hull of the dist. the only ground on the points should be where the screws hold them in the other side (breaking side should not ground) . good luck and hope this helps
