If you see a dim image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.
Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

The Toshiba Satellite M305-S4907 Notebook PC, uses a single CCFL for a Backlight.

Primer before we go on;

An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source,

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/NA_Optical/Systems/BehindTheScenes/Optics101/

Click on the monitor image.

The additional light source is a Backlight.
A Backlight can be a CCFL, (Or two of them), or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch.
Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height.

View the last 8 photos.

A screen Inverter is used on laptops that use CCFL for Backlighting.
A screen Inverter converts the power (Electricity), from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

Laptops that use a series of LED's for backlighting, do Not use a screen Inverter.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault can be attributed to a bad screen Inverter.

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Satellite,M305-S4907,PSMD8U-02R015B,Laptop,Inverters.aspx

The plastic thin frame in front of the LCD screen, is the Display Bezel. (Toshiba = LCD Bezel)
The screen Inverter is located behind the Display Bezel, and mounted at the bottom of the LCD screen.
(LCD Screen Frame, actually)

Easy to get to; easy to replace.

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-M305/remove-screen-inverter-video-cable-1.htm

How to test a screen Inverter? Requires a Sensitive multimeter.
Read fairly expensive,

http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htm

Because of this; and the low cost, plus ease of replacing; most home users just opt to replace it.

Know this;
Fluorescent lamps have MERCURY inside. HIGHLY poisonous.
Now couple that with the long thin makeup of the CCFL, and how easy it is to break it.

This is why if the screen Inverter is found to NOT be the problem; I would suggest replacing the LCD screen itself; instead of trying to replace the CCFL, and cause possible Mercury poisoning.

Toshiba a305-s6898 computer starts up and goes to black screen what can fix this

When it goes to the blank screen, are you able to see the icons and such , like in the background? If so then the backlight on the screen has burned out. You could replace the screen relatively easily if you're technically inclined.

My screen blackout out, or burned out, or just won't go on. It was just sitting on the desk when I left. When I came back a few hours later, it was black.

Backlight CCFL is burned and needs replacing. OR,...and Toshiba will not admit to it, but the LCD inverter has gone bad. The part is $200.00 bucks! Plus labor to install it. If you bought the three year warranty they push on you and try to have it repaired, they get out of it saying that you dropped it and thats what damaged it. I bought two A205 at the same time from the same store and they both have the same defective parts. Good Luck with this one. They wont admit that its a factory defect!

Flickering and Shaky Screen

The LCD backlight is burning out or the LCD inverter board that controls it is going bad. Backlights are cheap. Must take apart LCD screen assembly. Inverter is a bit more expensive. Definitely fixable.

Backlight problem

If you have alot of important info it may be a REALLY good idea to back it up, if your laptop has a CD writer burn your data to disk before sending it off (remember to test any disks you make as you don't wish to lose data due to a scratched CD do you), or you can buy an external HDD or thumbdrive which you can save your important data to....If your data is important you really should be backing it up anyway. It does sound like you have an underperforming backlight or PSU issue. I hope this helps.
