Question about Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 750 GB SATA Hard Drive

2 Answers

I added an SATA HD to a system whose C and D drives are a WD 400GB PATA HD. The Hitachi 750GB drive has no jumpers for master/slave. After boot-up the system sees it but assigns no E or other letter designation. The HD came with no documentation and the motherboard manual only mentions where to find the SATA connectors.

  • Right Click [My Computer] and click Manage
  • Click Disk Management on the left side
  • Inspect the drives listed. The new drive may need to be formatted for the operating system to recognize it and assign it a letter.
  • To format the drive, right click the drive with no letter, and click Format. Choose your format (Preferred NTFS), and quick format the drive so that windows recognizes it.

You need to check the drive manager in the control panel / admin icon. In here you should be able to see the drive and format it because if it is a new drive windows will not detect it as an acceptable drive before it is formatted by drive manager.

Western digital wd2500bevt slave jumper settings

SATA drive position is determined by the plug on the motherboard, not a jumper. Jumper settings are for PATA drives (much older).

Hard drive won't reboot (jumpers not set proper)

Just google your drive's make and model and search the results for a diagram of the jumper settings.
If you have a SATA drive, there ARE no jumpers. If the drive is a PATA, then if it's connected with another drive or cdrom, then make the cdrom 'slave' and the disk drive 'master'.
Check your bios setting sometimes bios changes the boot order esp. if bios doesn't find a boot disk- make sure you have your desired boot device showing in the boot setup.

I want to make my WD1600AAJS hard drive a master hard drive, but the port is diffrent than my other hard drives. what do i do?

A SATA drive cannot be set to master or slave like a PATA drive can. SATA only allows one device per port. If the problem is that you don't have any SATA ports in your computer, you can get a SATA host adapter card for your system, update your motherboard to a motherboard with SATA ports, or get a PATA hard drive.

Jumper setting for slave drive

there is no such master or slave setting when SATA is used.
it is mainly used to tell the motherboard which one is master or slave when connected with IDE cable (PATA).
you don't need to worry about it as you are using a SATA HD.

the boot disk priority can be set in the BIOS
press del or F2 after you press the power button on CPU. you will be put with the BIOS/CMOS setup. go to boot priority and set accordingly, there is also an option to set the default hard disk in case you have more than one HD.
