I am soon going to purchase the new Sony 36in widesceen tv. Has anyone purchased this set who has had any problems. I had major problems with the Panasonic 36in and don't wish to repeat the same mistake. Any comments would be very welcome.

Had mine for 2 weeks and I'm very very happy. Had to wait 4 months for it though like almost everyone.
It had a very minor setup prob - the overscan was slightly excessive resulting in some loss at the edges of the picture - but I really wouldn't have noticed it without the test cards which came on my R1 copy of Fight Club. I managed to fix myself using service mode (info at #).
My only outstanding problem is that Telewest Active Digital does not send the right info to switch into widescreen mode for true widescreen (anamorphic) broadcasts. This is currently a problem with all Sony and Phillips TVs. To get round this I have to set the set top box to "4:3 letterbox" which obviously loses some image quality. But, the set does such a good job in DRC50 mode of improving resolution that its not that big a problem. Telewest also told me last night that they now have the instructions from Sony and plan to do a software upgrade end of October/early November to fix.

Yes, the silver one.
There were colour patches in the corners of the screen. These colours were not always visible, but sometimes they would radiate across half of the screen. The technicians thought the problem was down to the room, but with two replacement sets setup in different rooms with the same problem makes one think differently.
Before you buy ask the retailer that in the event of problems you can have a refund.
Good Luck

yep, i've had problems. You'll find that every TV set ever made has problems. I bought mine from letsbuyit for 1799 I in the process of replacing it as the picture starts shaking and jumping around. I don't think anyone else has had this problem. Also, when i use the svideo jack on the front with my dreamcast I get annoying bands of grey panning across the screen.
