Question about Carrier XHB123D X/Y Series Heat/Cool Air Conditioner

The printed circuit board keeps clicking.

When the furnace is turned on the signal from the printed circuit board that operates the pilot has a hard time getting to the pilot causing the pilot to be intermittent.

    It is under a heading with a model number I don't recognize how old is this furnace, is it single speed?

It does have a pilot? Is it spark ignited? I suppose this is the clicking your talking about. try blowing the pilot area out with compressed air and blow all around the base of the pilot. Then retry it. see if the flame looks stronger after this too. If its still acting up you may have a ground that's not very good. try removing the burners and manifold and cleaning them and vacuum the heat exchanger out while apart. then while putting it back together look for anyplace that may have had a ground wire attached and is now gone.replace this and see if it improves .

Almost all furnaces built after 1978 have intermittant type pilots.
Ca banned them requiring electronic spark or hot surface ignitors, followed by induced draft motors, pressure switches or centrifigal switches that "prove" a induced draft exists, allowing the pilot sequence to commence.
electronic spark type units have a high voltage low amperage spark that is AC. Fire rectifies electricity that passes through it meaning AC becomes DC ! Fire is a terrible conducter however as a result , the DC signal is only milliamps/volts signal strength. the DC prescence is proof a flame exists for pilot, and safe to commence to mainburners.

As long as pressure switches stay closed, safeties and limits stay closed
and the DC signal to the ignition module is not broken, the furnace will run.

The normal sequence of operation is upon a call for heat from the thermostat a 24 volt signal is sent to W white (heat circuit) at the low voltage terminal board on furnace.
from there depending on unit and age the heat circuit may include a circuit board, but it still has the typical limits and safetys reqired for operation
its just not using electromechanical relays to control fan and induced draft motor etc.

for the induced draft to begin ,all limits, safetys in heat circuit must be closed.

induced draft begins and a proving switch, either pressure or centrifigal close allowung the pilot to begin, a spark or hot surface ignitor is energized and a pilot flame established,modern types use flame rectification to prove a flame, older Carrier, Payne,types have a 3 wire switch in the piloyt assembly that is a bi metal that expands and contracts clicking open and shut, allowing pilot or main burners, depending if cold or hot.

pressure switches are attached with tubing to the induced draft wheel housing and sense pressure differential and close upon induced draft running, the orifices that the tube attaches to on induced draft housing often plugs or is restricted causing pressure switch to fail to close, or waver on open and close , open , close, .

if you can run the fan in the on postion , you have both high and low voltage to the furnace.

if you dont have fan control check power, breaker , fuses.

Air conditioner was on yesterday and now the heat or the airconditioner will not turn on!! checked the circuit breaker already and the pilot light is on. its a achiever 10 ruud


Hello my name is Heath it will be my pleasure to assist you. First thing to do is go to the furnace take off the lower blower door and locate the circuit board turn the power off to the furnace. In the circuit board there should ba a small car like fuse usually 3 or 5 amps check the fuse it is probably blown replace the fuse with the same amperage fuse and then turn the power back on on the furnace and check the operation of the furnace.

Goodman have troubleshooting idiot lights on the board. Look for flashes and count em.
The flash explanations are printed on the backside of the blower cover on most models.
A sampling of various failure codes on a furnace:

Read one LED flash that stays on continuously to mean your furnace has no signal coming from the thermostat and will not operate. Turn the power off and check the thermostat for improper settings or connections.

Interpret one LED flash that blinks on and off to mean your furnace has locked out because it could not ignite after three tries, and must be reset. Interrupt power to your furnace for 20 seconds or lower the thermostat so your furnace does not try to heat, then reset the thermostat to the previous setting. After one hour of lockout, your furnace will automatically reset itself and try to operate as usual.

Decipher two LED flashes to mean the draft blower is not working, or your furnace has a short in the pressure switch circuit. Turn off the furnace power and repair a short or replace the pressure switch.


Read three LED flashes to mean your furnace has an open pressure switch circuit or it has an induced draft blower operating. Check the pressure switch hose of your furnace for blocks or an improper connection. Also, look for blockages in the flue, and tighten any loose wiring.

Translate four LED flashes to mean your furnace has a primary limit circuit open, possibly from loose wiring or blocked filters. Check and clean filters, tighten wiring and check the flue for blockages.

Interpret five LED flashes to mean your furnace senses a flame without a call for heat. This could be from a gas valve closing slowly or a burner flame lingering.



Read seven LED flashes as a warning of a low flame sense microamp signal. This could happen with a coated flame sensor or a lazy flame from poor gas pressure. Turn off the power and adjust the gas pressure according to the information on the rating plate.



See eight LED flashes as meaning an igniter circuit problem due to a bad igniter or an igniter connected improperly. Replace the bad igniter or check the ground wiring, making necessary corrections.



Decipher nine LED flashes to mean the high-stage pressure switch circuit will not close during a high-stage-induced draft blower operation. Your furnace may have a pinched or blocked pressure switch hose, a blocked flue or loose wiring.

Read continuous flashing on the LED to mean your furnace has a reversed polarity of 115 volts. Turn off the power and correct the wiring polarity after reviewing the wiring diagram.

Rheem Model RGPS-12EARJR just purchased in Sept and now the furnace won't turn on. Can't find if there is a pilot light I should be starting, but even the fan doesn't go on - with or without heat


Newer, high efficiency furnaces have solid state controls and NO pilot light.
To light the gas the new furnaces use a ceramic heating element rather than a pilot light.
If the furnace isn't turning on you'll need to get a service tech to look at it for you. The circuit board has built-in diagnostics. Your furnace may have a window that lets you see the diagnostic light inside the blower box. Turn off the light in your furnace room to make it easier to see the flashing LED. See what pattern the light is flashing and look it up in your owners manual.
It's usually something simple, like no power (the light doesn't flash at all, obviously), or too much back-pressure on the exhaust line, or a faulty temperature sensor or faulty ceramic element.
I can't tell how you're trying to turn on the fan, but it could be as simple as a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.
There are just too many possibilities to make guesses.

HI; I need more info. How old is the equipment. name brand of equipment. Also to answer Your question ...Yes the tstat wire goes into the furnace to make several connections then a seperate cable(brown) will follow Your freon lines out to the condensor.Also try removing the cover and have a good light. Get someone to turn on heat at tstat and watch for clicking sound.Sounds like You have a spark assist pilot system. When the sparking starts the pilot light should come on. Then once the pilot sensor feels the heat comming from pilot light it will allow the gas valve to come on...BE CAREFULL...I ASSUME NO RESPONSABILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS...alpharome416 PS.usually there is nothing to worry about just keep Your space to begin with ok.

Gas Furnace Will not light


Hi, normally when you turn the gas off at the flex line valve and leave it off for awhile, the gas has to clear the gas valve and lines up to the pilot. Purge its self of air before it will light again. It will take the electronic ignition several clicks and more before there is enough gas to light the pilot and then open the main gas valve to fire the burners. Tell me, what kind of gas furnace is this when you speak of water? you say the site glass was full and you had to drain it and then the ignitor kept on clicking when it normally only took one click to light it. Please let me know the style as in a split system, a package unit, all in one, or what you have. I will wait to hear back from you. If the pilot does not light right away, then yes let it continue to click and see if it will light. On a heater with the electronic ignition control module on it or a circuit board, this is what tells the pilot coil to energize to light the pilot. It will send power to the pilot coil to open and let gas through to light and same for the main gas valve, will get a signal to open when the pilot is on. It will not open unless the pilot is lite for saftey. I will wait for you're responce.

Goodman GMP 125-4 one blinking light code. Gas valve has been replaced (at cost of $443). Didn't fix problem. Same co wanted $415 to replace circuit board. I did it myself for $99 part. Still same problem!...


One blink means it didn't light after a number of attempts. You replaced the circuit board and gas valve. Read on for some suggestions. On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Dayton Furnace - Pilot Light Goes Out but Fan keeps running?


Pilot lighted furnaces have a thermocouple made from disasimilar metals that when heated create electricity to actuate a relay that alows the gas to flow to the furnace.

When the thermocouple gets coated with carbon from the pilot lights constant burning it acts as an insulator and keeps the thermocouple from getting enough heat to generate electricity, a very good safety factor.

What you have to do is locate the thermocouple it should be located over the pilot light, you will see a gray substance around the thermocouple it will be hard like cement, take a knife and scrape away as much of the gray material as possible then sand the themocouple with a medium sandpaper until it shines, use one of you wifes emery boards, this should solve your problem.
