Question about Mtd Garden

Need to know the kind of oil or grease that goes in transmission

I'm having problems with my yard machine MTD rear tine garden tiller that has stopped pulling. It will pull for awhile and then it stops. I can push on the tiller and it starts pulling again but will soon stop.

I have a Yard Machine rear tine tiller that has sat unused for 4 years. I replaced the engine and while in goes forward and backward, when I engage the tines they won't rotate and the engine bogs

Transmission/differential.
Perhaps the unit sat for 4 years because the tines would not turn and your replacement engine has not solved the real problem.
I'd say disassemble the chain case to discover what's locking the tine drive.

It is the shift fork in the transmission. Bad part design and if you plan to take it apart, use sandpaper and really clean the wheel axle and tine axle before you take it apart.

I have a MTD yard machine rear tine tiller. Goes forward and reverse but tines wont rotate. How do I fix?

You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

I had similar problem recently with 2007 Huskee MTD series 410. The shift assembly bent and couldn't move the clutch collar all the way over on the drive shaft.

Have a rototiller it moves OK but the tines do not turn It is a mtd yard machine rear tine

Seems to be a fairly common problem with these units. If the big pulley is turning which I assume it is as the drive wheels work, it is most likely a problem in the gear box. The shift mechanism in these units leave a lot to be desired. You can try to repair it your self or take it to a service center. Labor will be high due to the amount of time required to separate the engine and transmission.

MTD series 410 rear tine tiller drive wheels slip

I have the same issue with one I am working on. It appears the keys in the drive shaft are not rotating far enough out on the drive gear side to fully engage in the gear. I have studied and studied this and so far I have been unable to determine why. If I find out I will let you know. I am also trying to figure out what is supposed to pull these keys out of the till engagement gear.

Can't find filler plug on transmission

Jim the older tillers did not have a place to put grease in. You have to break the case apart then it takes 00 grease. These are sealed units and don't need additional grease. Check with Sears.com parts lookup for a new manual. I am on my second Craftsman r/t tiller now rebuilt the transmission on the first and wore it completly out then bought a new about 8 years ago. About to rebuild the transmission on it.

Broken clutch cable connector, MTD Tiller

I found micro fiche on jackssmallengines.com . Click on the manufacturer's tab at the top of the page then you'll have the option to use an off-site tool to locate your machine. I used it and found my 1990 mtd rear tine tiller. I needed the cable that engages the tines - maybe the same as you. The part number for my 1990 model's cable was 746-0535. Dont know if it was still the same in 96 to 98. But look at the fiche and see.

the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft
