Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Click "Power Options." Click the "Change What Closing the Lid Does" hyperlink on the left side of the screen. Click the "Closing the Lid" drop-down menu. Select either "Sleep," "Hibernate" or "Do Nothing." All three of these options will stop your Acer laptop from shutting down completely when you close the lid. Click "OK" to save changes.

turn it on and shine a torch onto the screen while it is black. if you can see what is on the screen while doing this you will need to get a new backlight. these are not expensive, around £15. you will need a technician to install it for you though.
