Belt change for Teac a4010sl reel to reel

I also have an old teac a4010sl reel to reel. Over the years the belt has disintergrated. It seem to me that in order to change the belt, one has to somehow remove the piece that holds the axle of the capstan to the unit itself. I'm just not sure if I have to remove the screws that holds the capstan/tape head unit by going into the back of the unit or can I fix the problem by working from the front.

It is not all that easy but it can be done. Take the Thrust plate off the mounts and the motor and all will come off together. Clean the motor pulley and Flywheels and then place the new belt MCM 42-3030 on the unit and when putting the thrust plate back on just lift the belt over the motor pulley with you hand then place the plate on and secure one screw. This is best done with deck lating on face. Then sit deck up and rotate flywheels by hand to make sure bet positions itself at the rear of the flywheels. If that goes well then put the remaining screws into the thrust plate and set the speed with the speed alignment tape for both speeds. Anytime you mess with the drive system the calibration of the speed IS required. If you need more help, I can be contacted at skywavebe@sbcglobal.net .

It is a bit of a job as 4 screw need to come out of the main support from the rear and then the capstan bearing unmounted from that support to get the belt in the machine. There are some linkage items to watch when you put it back together but then after that it should be good to go. Make sure to oil the capstan bearing. I may have done 100 of them at this point and one just the other day. it is not the easiest of decks to do this on but then the belts can last 10 years between changes if used regularly.

You can but try! However either make a drawing of how the thing fits together or better still take pictures if you have a digital camera. Then you will know how it fitted together.

The unit can be fixed in the right hands. The auto rewind function might be on but the reel rotation sensor is not seeing it move. Probably needs all new belts.

FF problem on Teac Reel to Reel

You need new brake pads installed as the ones in there now are dried up and may have fallen off. This is very common with older decks or 30-40 years old.
I am still working on these decks at Skywave Tape Deck Repair in the Chicago area.

I need a capstan drive belt for a TEAC 3440 reel to reel recorder. Wherr can I find one?

Just measure the diameter in MM and put the result into google with the words 'cassette drive belt'. Belts are not maker specfic.

I have a teac 3340 reel to reel recorder and believe it can only function in 2 speeds 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips. I have many reel to reel recordings that are 3 3/4 ips. Is there an adapter or gadget I can use...

In short, no. if you look closely you will see the Teac 3340 has a much larger/thicker capstan shaft than other Teac reel decks. This feature allows the faster tape speeds...7 1/2 and 15 ips. In order to slow down the Teac 3340 you would have to change the flywheel to one from another deck that was made to run at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2. Which is possible but some work..plus you would have to find a slower speed flywheel from another Teac deck. Also to maintain performance, the bias and Eq positions for the slower speeds would have to be readjusted from 7 1/2 and 15.
