: hi. thanks. i looked at both the paper and online manual
: pages for interlnk.
: it says that host must be running DOS 6.0 or later, but both of
: my 286 PCs run DOS 5.0.
I run PC-DOS 5 on my machines. I used the INTERxxx programs from MS-DOS
6.22 and it worked correctly.

Greetings,
Bull chips. A '286 is more than fast enough to run full-bore 115kb/s
assuming the standard (16 byte?) FIFO. This is still not 20-30kB/s.
A parallel connection is needed to get 512 - 1Mb/s (64 - 128kB/s).

Your 286 will be unable to keep up with even the modest 11 Kb/s speed of a
full-bore serial port. You might try a network connection instead.

You use DEBUG (part of ms-dos) or a sector editor.

i messed around with "procomm.dir" a bit and it looks like i'll
be be able to do it.
how do you edit a binary file like that in DOS?
i don't know an easy way to do this even in Unix.
(i'd prob. use sed or tr.)
be be able to do it.

That's because PROCOMM.DIR is really a binary file and if you use any
editor to _add_ characters in the middle of the file, the directory
won't load properly. It's been so long since I used Procomm
(although I still have an original registered DOS version on the 360K
floppy from Datastorm) that I can't tell you whether anyone ever
patched it successfully to handle high-speed modems with 38400 or
higher port rates.
I do know that the original Procomm did _not_ have support for the
16550 UART, which could be another and more important limitation for
you. Look for COMMO, a shareware comm program. It will run on any
DOS-based system you're likely to have, even from a 360K floppy. It
can handle high-speed modems just fine including properly supporting
high-speed ports (16550 UART and above) and rates that are much
higher than 115,200 bps.
