Boot eMac

Unplug the DATA cable for the external HDD where it enters the computer.

recycle power to external HDD

plug the data cable for the external HDD back into the eMac.

Icon should appear after a small delay.

IF NOT -- Reboot eMac.

Can't read HD-- I/O error

"Joecolvette" has probably got it right, I've seen this before. The HDD enclosure circuit board has a fault. Can be resolved by replacing the enclosure. Plenty on ebay, just ensure you buy one with the correct HDD interface (Sata or IDE).

Alternatively, if you have a tower with a spare port, you could take the HDD out of the caddy, install it in the tower as a "Slave" (check jumper settings) ensuring the system drive is set to "Master". Then you can check whether the HDD itself is at fault.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. Replace the cable you are currently using with your printer cable and see if it is the cable if that is not the case I would open the case, and check your connections on the hard drive, there is a chance it might have come loose.

The external drive does not show up on my desk top and it is plugged in.

Follow the steps given below to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.

Hi Lofimodernis

Regarding your inquiry unsing a USB 2.0 external or HDD enclosure is basically used to connect a laptop HDD to another computer to be used to extract or back up files on to new HDD or another device. regarding with the error 2000 0146 as far as i can remember as a technician when it comes to dell laptops it would really be a HDD replacement

Hope I have answer your inquiry about the USB 2.0 external enclosure

CPU won't read it im running xp

Ok, here's some step by step instructions.

First is the light on the nexstar coming on when you plug it in, if so what colour? If not try using both USB connectors on the PC end to plug in, it's possible you're not getting enough power if the light is not on as many 2.5" hdd enclosures require 2 USB connections one for power and data and the other for additional power.

Next, if the light is on but no drive in my computer, right-click on my computer, then left-click manage, select disk management from the MCC window that pops up. If your Nexstar HDD shows up here, identify it on the bottom part of the window and report back what is said there.

If it is not there and the light is on, try a different USB port. If the light is not on or you tried the other ports and still no luck the enclosure itself may have failed.

Try moving the HDD into a new enclosure and try again. If this works, Great, if not then the HDD may be damaged and may need a pro to get your files back. If that is the case report back here with your progress and region and I will recommend an appropriate pro.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

External HDD format

Install HDD, Bootup as normal

Rt Click My Computer, Manage, Device Manager and in the Rt side, highlight the TOP icon. Then under Help, click the Computer with magnifying glass icon and wait. This forces your OS to 'Look' for any new devices.

When it finishes looking, close the window and look under My Computer to see if your new HDD is now there. It will have to be formatted for this part to work, otherwise go back to Disk Manager, Find it, Rt Click it and choose FORMAT.

If is is formatted and doesn't pop up... go back to Disk Manager .. or Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager and see if it is there. You may have to Rt. Click and import it as a foreign drive or Rt click and give it a Driveletter ;-)

Windows doesn't like Any HDD without win signatures on them - aka:'foreign disks' so ANY time this happens, if OS doesn't see it, use disk manager and Import it.

If it is the USB adapter that is part of the enclosure, (not the disk itself) you can transfer the HDD that is inside this enclosure into a generic external HDD enclosure. either that or you can use an external HDD adapter to access the data on a disk (like Magic Bridge), this is and adapter without the enclosure, and is fairly handy if you need to get data from HDD in this way.. or to Clone disks
