That is what I expected (language specific versions in the language specific Merlin packages, given there is VT for that langauge)
If it really would only rely on large dictionaries, it would be easy to add other langauges as well, but I guess it also knows the grammar to some extent to make better guesses in which you would either need different verisons or a file describing the grammar which can be used by VT (much like the dictionary).
Oh well, I'm eager to see how this will work out (if it will be included at all)

I thought I read where one doesn't need proprietary hardware with the new version - that the technology was going to be compatible with industry standard SoundBlaster cards. Think it was PC Week where I read it, but I stand corrected.

In <4gqfpo$@news.rz.uni-passau.de It does. I saw a show on tv where they were demoing VoiceType (the Windows version of course - apparently the OS/2 version is substantially faster). The woman doing the demo said that they ran 100 million words through some statistical analysis process, and came up with 3 word patterns to look for. Some of the things it was able to figure out based on this are quite amazing (like the two different spellings of practice and practise based on context - I didn't even realize that there was a rule for that, but it got it right - in the same sentence). An absolutely amazing piece of software. If they put this in Merlin, it will cement my decision to buy an Mwave card, even if they never do write OS/2 telephony software for it.

: In < : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : The support of the dictation is decided by the word library that is used to : decipher what is being said. The say is true, even when within the same language, : the example is that they are dictionaries for lawyers, medical people, etc.
: Given IBM usual way of doing software, the German version(if it exists, hey I : don't know) will be delievered with the German version of Merlin, etc. etc for : the other languages.
: The idea of multi, different language sessions going is dim in the near future due : to the reliance of the PC keyboard architecture to send the correct "characters" : to the application who is the object of the dictation. : Phil Doragh I don't think so, as the matching phrase in the alphabetic languages only has one set of "keys" to send to the executable. The DoubleByte codes are mapped to a single Unicode, but the tonal Idiographic languages might be a small problem I expect to see a $300 Merlin with Voice dictation in local language and one other 'European' language as ordered. Unicode and DoubleByte doesn'tt seem a concern in North America, except at Apple. D.Say

No, the user will tell.
Hey, just imagine what will be happening if this rumore is true! You will get a superb OS with Plug&Play (important for simple users). This is very well. But imagine the fact you could use your Sound Blaster to dictate. I would just get Merlin to try this dictation. Even if it requires a Pentium 133 to run, it would be THE marketing boost!
I can only tell you something: If we could get THIS as a feature, Merlin would be on the computers of MANY of my friends who are those simple users who buy their computers where they are cheapest!
DO IT!
Ciao, Philipp!
