GO HERE:

Don't be scared of the little ol' 24C02 non-volatile RAM chip that is used to store the passwordsand tags - there's one on EVERY stick of RAM!! (yup - that little ***** 8 pin job)...

PAY ATTENTION HERE: THE INFO AT THE ABOVE MENTIONED SITE IS INCORRECT! THEY ARE SHOWING A PICTURE OF THE CHIP, AND TELLING YOU TO SHORT PIN 3 TO PIN 6.
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS TO SHORT PIN 6 (SCL - clear) TO PIN 4 (VSS - ground), AND THEN APPLY POWER FOR 1 SECOND OR LESS. THIS WILL CLEAR THE CHIP, AND YOU'RE GOOD TO GO! - DONE IT MANY TIMES!

FYI: This process does NOT damage the chip in any way! Follow the instructions on obtaining the DELL "DST" CD, and with it, you can re-load the chip with whatever you like!

GOOD LUCK!

As soon as you see the BIOS splash screen press <F12> a couple of times and pray.

Pick boot device from list that appears on screen.

(hopefully)

The problem is most all Dells use one of two keys at bios boot time:

F2 gets you into the CMOS Setup

    and

F12 gets you into the "Boot Device Chooser" menu.

Some dell laptops DO NOT have the F12 capability. Sounds like you may have one of those laptops and/or that capability has been disabled.

If you can get to Safe mode, try no password at all for the administrator password and pray like hades.

Regarding manually "fixing" the BIOS password problem you are having: (from elsewhwere on the web -- many, many responses just like this one)

    _______________

If you can prove ownership then Dell will happily help.

Otherwise you have to corrupt that eprom (or replace it)

There is no other option that I know of.

    thank you for the information
do you know where I could find fairly detailed instructions on finding and corrupting the eprom
and if u could explain corrupting the eprom?

Do a search on this site for "d600 eeprom" then read all that you find. Also look at all the threads I've also commented on already.

That should explain most of the theory.

The website which had pictures etc. has been taken down.

I don't know where the chip is on your laptop, so you'll need to find it on your own.

Here's another thought... If you're only concern is using the laptop itself, and you don't care about the data on it, pull the HDD out, format /s with FAT32. Then copy the i386 directory over to the disc you just formatted. Put disk back in laptop. Boot...

you'll get C:\ at boot time.

    Run C:\i386\WINNT.EXE

Have your serial no for the product you plan on installing at the ready.

You will USE another machine / external HDD enclosure / whatever to format the drive and copy the files. You may have to get a bit creative...

Cant start acer 5920

Hi Dear,

Check the mention below instruction to solve you problem.

1. Is the boot sequence in BIOS set to boot from CD or DVD, if not I would suggest you to go to BIOS and change the boot sequence to boot from CD and try to boot from the CD

2. Is the computer custom built or OEM built?

3. What is the model number and who is the manufacturer of the computer?

4. Have you made any changes to the computer by installing any new software or hardware?

5. Since when are you unable to boot the computer normally?

6. You need to get Windows Vista DVD to perform further troubleshooting either to scan the computer or to perform repair install, I would suggest you to contact the computer manufacturer to obtain vista DVD.

Thanks

I have acer aspire 3000+ and cant change bios setup to boot first from cd rom and erecovery doesnt work

Why can't you change the bios setup to change the boot order or boot sequence?

Also you can change the boot order or boot sequence temporarily by just rebooting the laptop then watch the screen for which key it says to hit to change the boot sequence or boot order, then hit that key when you see the message.

I tried to install windows 7 on my HP Pavillion DV9, but it's not booting from CD-ROM, i tried using a USB CD-ROM, but it's still not booting. pls I need assistance.

Hi,

Try to check if the windows 7 disc that you are using is not just an upgrade disc. Make sure that it is a bootable disc. Try to use other bootable disc to test. Also make sure that the boot device priority is set CD/DVD drive.

Hope this helps.

You need to change the boot sequence to start with the CD drive on the BIOS.
To access the BIOS you need to tap F10 while the computer is booting.

dead ? cant u even c anything on the screen..?
u can revice it back....if u can go into BIOS immedialty while switching on....
press DEL / F1 / F2 / Ins/ .....any one of this key to get to BIOS
look for the boot sequence...
u can make changes to make it bootable from CDROM / DVDROM
make the 1st boot seq to CDROM
then save the changes to BIOS by pressing F10...save and exit comand can also do it.
then insert the WIN xp install CD in the CD drive and swithc on again...
let it boot from the CD
if it does then u can re-format the disk and install the OS

I cant get it to let me change the boot setting so i can boot from cd

The moment you turn on your computer start taping F12 key on your keyboard, It will lead you directly to boot menu where you can select CD rom as your boot device, if that doesn't work that go to BIOS and under Bios you will either see "boot sequence" or "Boot" options from where you can change the sequence of your boot devices.

I have LG E500 and I want to instal XP. I cant make changes in bios like boot sequence, so I cant boot from cd and therefor I cant instal XP. What should I do?

I don't recommend downgrading your laptop from Vista to XP but...

According to manual, pressing F2 during boot sequence takes you to BIOS and then you can change
the order of the boot sequence in the BIOS. From the manual:

"...set passwords, change the booting order, and add new peripheral devices to the machine."

If you can't find boot sequence in BIOS setup, talk to a support rep online:

http://ca.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

You may need to use a different server if not in CA.
