Re: charge light orang on for a second and turn off unit...
This kind of problem is usually caused by either of this 3 things: Either the problem is the battery not being able to charge anymore(bettery would need to be replaced), or the charger does not give any charge to the batter(recommend try another charger), or last would be the console charger port( would need to replace console, or repair charger por,not recommended)

It sounds like the battery has gone bad- (I've tried running the DS w/ power only, it does not work- it HAS to have the battery engaged.)
You can find replacement components all over the web, bar that a stop to a local game store can pick you up an used DS for about 60.
Your DS may have a problem reading the battery gauge, and the DS will only let the charger do its thing for a period of time. Then, if it is still connected, it may burst more charge in. This means that your DS is acting up, and your battery may have a rare (and not harmful to the DS) malfunction.
First of all, your DS Lite is charging both ways.....with power on and without power on. You have for almost 99% sure a blown fuse F2 on the systemboard. If you can solder you can try to replace it with a new one but be adviced, it is tricky if you don't have the skills with soldering SMD components and it can send your DS lite to the trash. So my advice is find someone that repair DS Lites or order a fuse on eBay and try it yourself.
it could be a stuffed charger or power supply problem sometimes when you drop it that does it i suggest you buy a new one or send the old one in to nintendo if u can trick them into ur ds bein almost new...
When you first get the DS it will have a bit if charge on it but only a few hours worth. When the DS charges it usally comes up with a orange/red ish light then that goes out about a few hours later when its charged. ad if you want to chek if it is charging correcly turn the DS on whilst it is charging and the little battery simble in the top right corner should show the battery carging.
