How do i install seagate st3500320as 500 gb sata internal hard disk on a msi 845pe max2 series motherboard. i have installed the hard disk, but it is not detected. presently i have a 40 gb ide hard disk with windows xp os

That model of system board does not have SATA connectors. i suspect you have a regular ATA disk (connected with a flat cable), which has to be configured as master or slave if it's on the same flat cable as another device (disk or CD/DVD). best is to dismount the disk again, because the jumper config is described on the disk's label. make sure that the disk that carries your OS is set as master and the new disk as slave. note that this jumper setting may differ from one manufacturer to another.

Ther are jumpers betwwin the data cable and power cable of hard disk...ur 40gb hard disk will be on primary...if u are attaching ur hard on same cable u should put jumper on Secondry

Yes, it's compatible with the motherboard, no, it's not compatible with the XP install disk because it doesn't have SATA support. And since Asus doesn't provides it special driver needed (one that must be put on a floppy) it means that you simply cannot install XP on this disk.
All you can do is to obtain another PATA hdd what ever its size and install XP in it. Then put the new SATA disk in and use it to store all the installed programs and all your files on it. As a bonus you won't lose them if the new PATA disk fails or XP gets corrupted.
Or install Vista or 7 instead of XP, the have support for SATA disks

Dear Fried its possible.. Go the Boot Menu at your BIOS ( For go the BIOS Press DEL at startup your system) there you may se Hard Disk Priority Option. There you can change Hard disk Priority... you may need setup your sata as first one..

you need bios update

download bios express installation file

install first any 40 or 80 gb ide harddisk install windows and run express installation file
your motherboard will update your bios

Check the SATA/RAID controller setting. It could have been set to [Disabled] Refer to your user?s manual for a detailed description on how to enable the onboard SATA/RAID controller by adjusting the jumper or BIOS settings. Regards SparkGap
