Dell C521 Will boot to User login But cannot use mouse or keyboar

First off this is my cousins computer. I took it from her house last night and left her mouse and keyboard thinking that Mine would work. I got it home plugged it in and it booted up to the windows login screen. Then I had no mouse or keyboard. I checked the Settings and The usb ports are all enabled. I have mouse and keyboard up until the windows XP loading screen then it shuts off. I have tried to remove the battery from the board for over an hour and even jumped out the jumpers and it still wont load with my mouse and keyboard. Is it possible that i had to have the original mouse and keyboard plugged in to work? Thanks.

What happens is I have mouse and keyboard. Then Windows XP screen comes up(the one with the loading bar) then the mouse and keyboard shut off. The machine keeps loading. It goes to the User login screen. At that point I have no Mouse or keyboard to get into the actuall desktop. The machine will stay on.

I think I know whats going on. The mouse that She has is a regular ball mouse. I have an optical mouse. Her keyboard is regular. My keyboard is a saitec keyboard. Both need to have drivers installed if I remember correctly. So If I get her keyboard and mouse it should work.

If it is a USB then it should work with any keyboard and mouse. When you say it shuts off after XP loading screen, does the machine power off? have you tried unplugging the mouse and keybaord and let Windows load?

Simple, when the login screen comes up, it is actually detecting the new hardware (keyboard and mouse) and installing it's drivers.

give it some time like about 4-5 minutes depending on how slow the machine is and it should install the new hardware. keep checking with the keyboard to see if it is solved.

ok, very strange. When starting up the computer, are you able to use the keyboard as in getting into the BIOS screen?

ok, what about safe mode? Keep hitting F8 before Windows begins to load and select safe mode.

Ball mouse would mean PS2 connection right? Yes i guess you woudl need it first. But logically, USB should be detected right away unless there's an application preventing it to like a USB restriction.

other than that, i'm out of options. Sorry for that. Good luck

I have forgotten my password to my dell c521 computer, not the system password

As far as I know, there are a lot of tools and utilities that can be downloaded and used to recover, retrieve, reset windows password. However, I've tried a couple of these utilities through the years. The free software can help you, but you have to learn some computer skills and waste a lot time on learning. If you want to save more time, maybe Google third party password recovery tool or Google Window Password Seeker can help you.

Stuck on safe mode

Press F8 at boot up and select Normal boot up. Or if that fails to work then select Last Good Boot Up. that will restore the computer to a previous date when it was booting perfectly. That should help you.

Usb issue

Do you have a ps/2 keyboard/mouse? Or a usb->ps/2 adapter. I'd say boot up normally and log in with the ps/2 keyboard/mouse. Then, from device manager, right click everything under USB and such and uninstall. Then right-click your computer name in the device tree and scan for changes.
