Yes the jumper is set to master on the back of the HD. i have tried 2 differant HD and both do the same as i stated before.

  • aric_jacobse Mar 10, 2009

i was able to instal WIndows XP on the HD but after the system make the room for it and it reboots..when it is sxuposed to be going to the instal screen before i goes to that page like it should it stops and says there it cannot find the HD.

  • aric_jacobse Mar 10, 2009

It formats and goes through the first part of the instaler then the system reboots it is suposed to go to the final setup where it looks like windows and tells general information about windows xp as it is loading the information. sorry i am bad at discribing things. it does all the inital set up including formating when it is done it says windows has to reboot. it reboots and then goes to a dos page and that is where it says no HD found.

Ah, now I understand. Yes, your hard-drive isn't dead. For some reason your BIOS doesn't recognize the hard-drive, though. If you have another OS installer disc, have you attempted to install that Operating System just to see if it will boot off the hard-drive?

There is a possibility your windows installer is corrupt.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you are installing the Operating System and Windows Installer is about to format the hard-drive when the system reboots. Is that correct?

There is the possibility that this hard drive is DOA (Dead on Arrival) and needs to be replaced.

There is a possibility that taking out the jumper and trying to boot will work. I've dealt with some computers which would not accept any, and I mean ANY jumper setting. So try taking out the jumper, inserting the hard-drive back into the computer, then booting the system.

As yet another question, is there an OS (Operating System) such as Windows installed on that Hard-drive? If not, that might be why there is, "No hard drive found."

Did you set the proper jumper for the Hard-Drive?

You need to be sure that your computer is starting from the CD, not the hard drive.

On boot you should have the option to choose a start up. Try F12, or F2. Then choose your CD/DVD device.

You should be able to run the install from there. If not, you'll have to change the start up device in the BIOS, which is a whole other conversation.

Optiplex gx820 can i connect 300 watt power supply

You listed GX820 and GX260.

I am assuming you meant the GX260.

There are three varieties of the Gx260.

1) The SFF (Small Form Factor) power supplies can be replaced, but I know of no upgrades for these.

2) For the SDT (Small Desk Top), you can get up to a 270 (best I have seen).

Example of where to get one.

For the Mini Tower, here is an example of a 400W replacement. There may be others for this model.

I have a GX280 Mini Tower and recently upgraded my PSU to one very similar to the one above.

As much as you can fit in a agp 4x card. If you have the flat desktop or the skinny tower you need 5to get a low profile card, a little hard to find for a desktop. Laptops mainly use them. Try see what they have in agp 4x low profile or regular size if you have the mini-tower(fatter).

Installing a sound card into my Optiplex GX260

OptiPlex GX260 can be Small Form-Factor, Small Desktop or Small Mini-Tower. Compatibility with PCline 5.1 PCI depends on the profile of the PCI Card and the Profile of your OptiPlex.

GX260 Small Form-Factor is compatible with Low-Profile PCI Cards only. GX260 Small Desktop and Small Mini-Tower are compatible with standard PCI Cards. (Small Mini-Tower however uses a PCI Cage).

Check OptiPlex GX260 Systems User's Guide -
From here you visualize the 3 form factors. Also there is info and steps to install PCI cards.

1. Generally, upmarket PCI cards are standard height. Some manufactures supply a metal piece to allow it to be used in Low-Profile or Standard Profile.
2. Driver software needs to be installed after the hardware is installed.
