Problems reinstalling Dlink DFE 690 TXD network...

By Rogers - usenet poster

I have been trying to reinstall a network card (d-Link
DFE 690TXD)in my XP Home operated Dell Inspiron laptop at
no avail. One day I had a probem with my internet account
and the service was cut off, I though the problem was in
the card, and uninstalled. After making several attemps
to reinstall the driver for the card, I realized were the
problem was and reactivated my internet account. However,
now, when I try to reinstall the card, I get a message
that says: error occurred, the name is already in use as
either a service name or a service display name. And next
to the name of the device there is a # sign followed by a
number, which would increase at every attempt I wouold
make : it is on #7 now.

This Problem has been added to the Share Your Expertise Page under "My Work Queue".

Hi,
Everytime you plug in a device such as your 690 to your laptop, Windows reassign an IRQ which may or maynot be the same as the previous time it was plugin. So even if it were the same device but auto given a different IRQ number, Windows will reinstall automatically or in your case manually, it gets assign a different Device Name such as #?. The setup will still work albeit many instances of the same device just as long as you use and configure the current or the latest or whatever #? is being used now, although of course kinda confusing sometimes.
There are several ways of removing the device, a few are:
1. Boot your computer in Safe Mode (F8) with Networking as Administrator without the card plugged in. Run windows and in Device Manager expand your Network Adapters. Uninstall/Delete all instances of Network card (DLink); or
2. Boot your computer normally as Administrator without the card plugged in. Run a Third Party Software/Application that will clean up your registry for orphaned entries such as Registry Cleaner, RegClean, WinOptimizer. Since the card is not there the third party software will assume registry entries referring to it as orphans and therefore remove them. Reboot with the card and allow Windows to auto install or use the CD installer that came with the card and follow closely the instructions; or
3. Boot your computer normally as Administrator with or without the card plugged in. Run regedit and manually delete all references to the DLink NIC/LAN card. As a reminder, whenever working with the registry, back it up, extreme care be practiced and keep in mind that doing regedit may result in a non operational windows. To initiate search for the instances, Ctrl+F and type in "D-Link" without the quotes, once done continue searching for the other instances by pressing F3 and deleting all occurrences. Stop when "Finished searching through the registry" is displayed. Reboot with the D-Link and allow Windows to auto install or use the CD installer that came with the card and follow closely the instructions.
Hope this be of some help to you. Pls post back how things are or if you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
