It's broken solder point or points on the GPU chip. It's very common with the thinkpad T40. This can only be repair permanently by replacing the motherboard or reflowing the solder on the GPU with a heat gun. There is a utube video demonstrating the reflow process.
You can confirm this is your issue by applying strong downward pressure on your laptop just above the left corner of your touchpad and turning the laptop on. If the laptop boots completely while holding this pressure, you can be sure your laptop has this issue.
Good luck!

Hi,
Often this indicates that the battery is nearing its end of life. Even when plug and using the AC adapter/charger, this would occur if the electrical consumption is always at its peak. Noticeable is especially when the built-in WiFi card is in use.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Check the CPU and Fan/Heatsink assembly. I have a pretty good feeling that the CPU is heating up too much and is not being cooled properly. There may be lint or dust clogged in the fan. You can get access to this pretty easy by removing a few screws on the bottom panel that houses the CPU/fan.

hi there, my sisters dell laptop does the same thing. My best guess is that a hard knock on the graphics card and knocked a few pins out of it. This is something that a average person can not do. My suggestion is to bring it to a computer shop and tell them that you think it's the monitor connections.
